Is EA ever going to do anything with the Ultima franchise?

I've always loved the Ultima games, from the originals to UO.

Back in the day I was really excited for UO2 but we all know what happened with that. EA destroyed Origin, and UO2 was cancelled.

Then EA teased us with yet another Ultima game, Ultima X Online, which yet again was cancelled. They released a statement to fans saying their efforts were better focused on Ultima Online instead of resources into a new game.

Well EA, it's been a while. Ultima Online is ancient. You have the Ultima license. I for one, would like to see them attempt to do something with it.

How do you guys feel about it?

I also, I would prefer it to be a single player RPG. The MMO market is flooded, and I'm not convinced they could do the game justice with a new Ultima MMO.

That's just it though, EA won't do anything with the Ultima franchise other than make expansions for UO. Which is great for UO, but I'd like to see a modern game.

And Magic Carpet, Populous, Dungeon Keeper, System Shock 2, Wing Commander, and the entire Jane's catalogue. At least, those are the ones I'm worried about...in addition to Ultima.

Personally, I'd be contented with just a graphical overhaul of the Ultima games. Keep the story lines and core gameplay the same, but give it a graphics update (and please, for the love of all that is good and holy, do NOT convert it into a first-person game like Oblivion or Fallout 3).

I'd buy a "graphically" enhanced (yet still isometric) version of the Ultima games in a heartbeat.

Ultima Underworld was first person, let Bethesda buy the Ultima license, they'd do a better job than anything EA would come up with, which is nothing.

I don't know, I think I would have rather had nothing than the abomination that was Fallout 3. Talk about dumping all over a franchise, its lore and its fanbase. Personally, I wouldn't let Bethesda remake Big Rigs much less a storied, classic RPG franchise. They've already gutted one classic game do they really need the chance to ruin another?

Maybe a third person could be good. Or isometric, looking somewhat like Diablo III. Of course keeping the good gameplay the series are known for. I couldn't care less for any MMO. Make it a proper game.

If anything, the only studios (other than the late, great Origin) I would let anywhere near the Ultima franchise would be Bioware or Obsidian. I know that there were a group of modders who were making a fully functional version of Ultima V in the Aurora engine (Ultima V: Lazarus, I think it was called). If anybody has any idea on how to make a faithful update of Ultima, I would imagine it would be the NWN crew.

I'm not too sure but if they could they might do a single player game based off of Ultima.

Did you not read what I posted? UO is ancient, UO is a non factor. Where is a NEW Ultima game? Do you still play or care about UO? I sure don't. It's time for something new.

ready my sig. Thats what i thought. For the playerbase of the game the graphics overhaul they did, plus expansions is enough. Plus all the real UO vets play on pre-EA private servers. Making a new game would be a crazy waste of money as the game is too hardcore for the current generation of carebears, and EA has ruined the original gameplay taking away the hardcore gameplay making it not that great.

I'm not even talking about a new UO game. I'd actually prefer to see a new single player RPG, which is what started the entire Ultima franchise.

You realize there are more Ultima games than UO? You seem to be confusing UO with Ultima.

UO, while a good MMO for it's time, really doesn't have a whole lot in common with it's single player predecessors.

probably not enough pull for a new a Ultima game. Considering Ultima is only known to the old school RPGers. Syndicate though.. Yeah. I have no idea why they've done nothing with Syndicate. A new Syndicate game could definitely work well in the current gen. Even if they changed it into lets say a third person action game such as Gears, but in the syndicate world and with upgrade able skills and team based commands. It would be appealing to new gen gamers, and as a old school gamer I would still buy that.
