ok, i just saw the sims 2: ikea home stuff on gamespot. i guess it's an expansion that gives you all kinds of items that you can find in ikea. that's right - IKEA!!! what does this mean - you get crappy furniture that can't last more than one move? i mean, what's next? the sims 2: pottery barn? the sims 2: slumming it with walmart? isn't this taking the concept of expansions too far. this is the 16th expansion. the SIXTEENTH!!! i'm seriously afraid for sims 3. and more than that, i'm afraid for spore, cuz i can totally see them making 20 expansions for spore if it sells (and who are we kidding - it's going to sell!). what do you think? are they taking it WAY TOO FAR?

list of expansions for the sims 2:

university
nightlife
open for business
pets
seasons
bon voyage
freetime

holiday party pack
family fun stuff
glamour life stuff
happy holiday stuff
celebration! stuff
h&m fashion stuff
teen sty le stuff
kitchen & bath interior design stuff
ikea home stuff

I only have Sims 2 (don't ask :|). It seems EA doubles the number of expansions for their games :) Sims-7 expansions and sims 2 with 7 so far and many item packs that worth($) almost as much as expansions do. I wonder how will they "enhance" Sims 3 XD.

Well, its all the women's fault really. Since more than half the people who buy The Sims are women, I guess we can blame them right? Whatever, EA is going to milk this franchise until they have to resort to something like

"The Sims 2: Paint drying"

or something along those lines

EA know people buy expansions, so they keep making them. Is that fair? Should they offer half or so of the content for free as a show of good faith? Not for me to question really, I've not played it enough to say how much content already exists.

I think it's good for PC retail numbers though, so I don't mind it right now, just not when I'm buying it.

The expansions generally add a lot of gameplay stuff, like Open for Business. The stuff packs are just... packs of stuff. I'm amazed that they exist, but it's bloody genius, because it's exactly what the Sims customer base seems to want. I actually think it's better that they stick to licensed content i.e. H&M or Ikea too, since they've already got a huge modding community making their own non-branded stuff.

Its not even a particularly great game, my brother has it, it gets boring in about an hour and the people's voices annoy the crap out of me.

it wouldn't be so bad if the stuff packs or whatever they're called were like $10 per pop or something. at $10, you'd still have to spend $90 just to get them all. but no, they're $20, which means you'd have to spend $180 to get them all. not many of us are into the sims 2, so it's fine that they're doing this kind of junk for us, but what about spore? what if the game's really good and deep and worth playing? and what if they keep releasing expansions - $30 per expansion; $20 per stuff pack? i think we'd be pretty upset with ea if that were to happen.

It will be a lot harder to create expansions and sell them for Spore. All of the extra content is created by the players and uploaded to the Spore database then shared between everyone. So if someone makes a race of creatures that look like various bits of furniture there's your Ikea expansion.

I bough them :|

But in all honesty I love the sims, though I think that the Sims 2 lost the charm of the original. And in reality, there are "only" 7 expansions :P, the other ones you mentioned are just stuff(clothes, furniture, etc.)

Which is worse? EA pushing out this massive number of expansions or people spending $600+ dollars on them?

I'd sell my toenail clippings if I thought people would buy them, so no, in this case I think it's clearly the consumer that has taken it too far.

They're just responding to market forces. I don't like it, but I don't blame them.

The people who buy it are responsible. If there was no demand, there would be no supply.

Blame female adults and mothers buying every single one of them for their children as if it's mandatory to play the damn game.

For all the criticism that the Sims franchise receives, I actually find the Sims and the Sims 2 to be very fun to play. Some of the expansion packs clearly aren't worth the money, but others add some gameplay mechanics. I would pay $10 for the expansions like Open for Business.

Taking it too far? I think they already took it too far after the 5th expansion.

*Edit* It also makes me wonder what EA has in store for the Spore expansions.

i really don't see spore getting any expansions like that. how would they do it, anyway? adding more eyeball shapes to put on your creatures? the sims is an isolated example because the type of people that play the game (i.e. not most on this forum) LOVE buying those little stuff packs - it's not like they're spending much money on other games like GTA4 or COD4.

My g/f has every single expansion/stuff pack. She loves the game and plays it constantly. I don't get it however; seems really dumb to me. It's kind of funny that there's an Ikea pack coming out. We just decorated our apartment with stuff mainly from there and she got all excited to find out that's the next stuff pack. Women...
