I have a 360 and a good PC (with an 320MB 8800GTS). I was wondering if Gears for PC is a good buy. The PC version is actually cheaper on Ebay and Amazon than the 360 version, but is it safe to buy a used copy or does Games for Windows LIVE require registration that would make a used copy risky?

Don't even bother, not many people play, and there are many bugs. I had it for a while, and I was thinking of rebuying it for the pc, but I just got it for the xbox 360 and im happy with it.There are many people on the xbox 360 version, bc unfortunately bugs kept alot of pc gamers away.

Circuit City had it for 14.99 last week but I would recommend the 360 version over the PC version. It has some technical bugs that will never be fixed. I'm sure you can get a used 360 copy cheap.

Gears Of War is one of the best games iv played in 2007/2008. The feeling you get from getting a headshot halfway across the map, is breath taking. I don't know why soo many people complain about bugs and such. I have had no problems with the game, other than heating issues with my computer. I would get the game TC.

Thanks for the answers. I'll get the 360 version for online and co-op.

I would get the PC version. I have no problems with it, and it has better visual quality than the 360. The online is free also.

Never had any problems with the PC version, so I don't really know what people are complaining about.

Never played the multiplayer though... not really my thing.

There are a host of bugs with PC version, ranging from stuttering frame rates to characters getting stuck on objects.

The one that is the most annyoing is randomly losing your saved games which is quite widespread and with no way to back it up. There was even like a 60 page thread at Epic forums from people complaining about this single issue.

There has been only one patch for the game and that was something to do with Windows Live so nothing in-game has ever been fixed, so I guess avoiding such issues will depend on luck.

This is just a quick handful.

gears of war is a really polished game; i have only experienced ONE BUG when playing through the game on my pc. i'm not a big fan of the game itself, because i find it stupid, but there's nothing wrong with the pc version. nothing at all.

This is the first I've ever heard of people having issues with saved games. Hell, I've uninstalled and re-installed the game 3 different times and I've yet to lose any saved game info.

As for the stuttering, yes, that can be an issue for some people - while others never have a problem with it. I had issues with stuttering....I'm not sure if the stuttering is tied to having more the one processor (dual core, quad-core), or if the issues is a problem with just AMD processors or if the game doesn't respond well to SLI/Crossfire configerations.

I do know there are some simple tweaks you can do to help eliminate 90-95% of the stuttering issues. Here's the info pasted below (colored in Red are the important tweaks):

Well lately I'm hearing alot of guys having bad performance even when using 8 series card. By following these steps orderly I hope some of your issues will be solved. The Unreal Engine has had a long history of being a highly tweakable engine. These tweaks worked for me and plenty of others. So lets get to it.

-First thing first is to make sure all your drivers are up to date.

-Next simply click on Start. Now click on Documents. Browse and click on My Games. Next click on Gears of War for Windows. You should now see Binaries, Engine and WarGame. Click on WarGame and then Click Config. In that directory search for WarEngineUserSettings and open it using Notepad(Make sure your security allows you use your files as a Administrator else you will be prompt that these commands wont be executed. To do this simple right click on the Gears of War for Windows and select Properties. Click the Security tab. You should then see User names and Group names. Now click Edit to configure settings for the User/Group name. Next simply search for your computer name and select it. Under Permissions for _________ check all the tabs for Full control ect and select apply then ok.) In the notepad you open for WarEngineUserSettings search under System Settings for 'OnlyStreamInTextures'. It should say OnlyStreamInTextures=FALSE. Change FALSE to TRUE and save. This tweak should eliminate the low frames and stuttering.

Some people have reported by clicking Start then clicking Games and right click and 'Play' Gears for Windows crashing will eliminate.

For those that want to go further with tweaks follow along.

If your a Soundblaster X-fi user copy and paste these text under [ALAudio.ALAudioDevice] to your WarEngineUserSettings using Notepad.

UseEAX=True
Use3DSound=True
UseDefaultDriver=True
MaxEAXVersion=5
UsePrecache=True
MaxChannels=128
MaxEAXVersion=5
CompatibilityMode=False
UseFilter=True
UseReverb=True
TimeBetweenHWUpdates=10
UseEffectsProcessing=False
DeviceName=
LowQualitySound=False
MusicVolume=0.3
AmbientVolume=0.6
SoundVolume=0.6
VoiceVolume=1.0
DopplerFactor=1.0
Rolloff=0.5
OutputRate=48kHz

It should then look like this:

[ALAudio.ALAudioDevice]
UseEAX=True
Use3DSound=True
UseDefaultDriver=True
MaxEAXVersion=5
UsePrecache=True
MaxChannels=128
MaxEAXVersion=5
CompatibilityMode=False
UseFilter=True
UseReverb=True
TimeBetweenHWUpdates=10
UseEffectsProcessing=False
DeviceName=
LowQualitySound=False
MusicVolume=0.3
AmbientVolume=0.6
SoundVolume=0.6
VoiceVolume=1.0
DopplerFactor=1.0
Rolloff=0.5
OutputRate=48kHz

If your soundcard is a audigy ect, then these tweaks are usable however you have to know which Eaxversion your card supports and simpy change MaxEaxVersion to whichever your cards supports. Also you should know how many amounts of channels your card uses. Since I'm a X-fi user my card supports 128. If your cards supports 64, 32 and lower change MaxChannels= to whichever your card supports.

Quadcore users can add these texts to your WarEngineUserSettings to see if you get a performance increase:

[Havok]
HavokNumThreads=4

Dual core users should change to 2.

There has been some new tweaks I discovered and while I'm still observing to see if there helpful your more then welcome to try to them to see if it helps you. Add these texts to your WarEngineUserSettings.

[D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice]
UsePrecaching=True
UseMipmapping=True
UseTripleBuffering=True
UseGammaCorrection=True

If your not using Vsync then I don't recommend using the 'UseTripleBuffering=True', you can simply delete it.

I hope some of these tweaks can can ihelp you guys. Check to see updates for this blog post. Enjoy...

As for multi-player, I don't play it so I don't know what kind of community is out there on the PC version. I like the PC version better then the 360 because of the better graphics and the added content helps tie the story line together, better.
