Im about to go buy my tv Sony 50" SXRDTM Widescreen HD Rear Projection TV but I wondering if I should get the warranty that comes with it...A 5yr entended warranty for 429.99$. Thats seems pretty expensive considering the tv is about 1000$ itself. Is getting the warranty important or the tv wont break in 5 yr and the warranty is just a way to rip ppl off?

Getting an extended warranty at 50% of the product cost is *NEVER* worth it.

You get the standard 1 year manufacture's warranty with the purchase. In addition, if you buy it with a credit card, your credit card company will add an additional year to the warranty absolutely free.

Bottom line: no extended warranties

You have to look at your card member agreement. I know VISA/MC/AMEX specifically give you the extra warranty year as part of the stated membership benefits.

Nope, by the time it breaks you can probably have a bigger, better TV for cheaper than you paid for that one.

Yea, those high priced warranties are a huge risk. It's disgusting really.
For a TV, idk if it'd be worth it. But I will say I'm glad I did it for my digital camera and my computer. My extended warranty came in extra handy for those items.

At that price, no. I just got a new tv and got the extended warranty. TV was $1100 and the warranty was $149. I called a couple of repair places to find out some costs first. A service call in my area was $120 and for the bulb, the cost was something like $250. The warranty covers the bulb so I figured it was worth it. I also cannot easily move the tv if I decided to take it in to a shop so it was worth it to me.
