I'm thinking of getting GTA 4. However I don't own any consoles so that's not an option. Everywhere I've read that if you don't have a console don't even bother trying because it's so buggy on PC. Is this still true or have they patched it? I really want to play it =(.

They've patched up quite well, but at the end it all depends on your PC specs. You really need a quad-core system in order to get a truly amazing experience on the PC version. It's still okay on a dual core system, but you might run into some performance problems. Don't let the people fool you: It was a buggy mess on release, but they fixed a lot of the issues within a couple months.

That's good to hear because I'm too considering getting this for PC. The console versions are fine, but I get a great deal out of enjoyment out of PC mods and the like.

If you have a decent PC the Windows version of the game is the 1 to get. Sure some people had issues with it at launch but the game has been patched up nicely. I'm running it on a Q6600 with a GTX 260 Core 216 (hardly a highend PC) and the game runs great at 1920x1200.

Specs:

2.4 dual core

2 gb ram

256 vram (nvidia 9600gt)

Is there any chance of running it well?

Probably not. It won't agree well with the 9600 GT or the 2.4 dual core...

Some people have had problems....others (like me), it ran flawlessly without any patching. As for the actual game...if you get it working correctly, it's awesome...

define well

id say low-medium settings, personally

but dont let that put you off too much, its far better than the console version at medium so theres a good chance youll have it running at least as well as the console version if not better. but theres no guarantee of that unfortunately

GTA 4 really depends on your specs. I was one of the lucky few that had no problems whatsoever but those activation hoops I had to jump through was a bit of a pain. The game is patched up pretty well now so definitely get the PC version.

It's not bad if you don't mind low or medium settings. The benchmark tool is worthless; expect at most half the FPS in-game.

It is 2 cores, but you can sometimes unlock a third or forth.

why would they give you cores to unlock on a cpu? that's silly. Anyway, a quad is definitely needed, I run it on a GTX295 and the city is just amazing.

The phenom II cpu's that are triple cores (720) dual cores are actually quad core processors that have one or two of the cores locked. With some mobo's and bios versions those cores can be unlocked if they are functional.

True that.I run it on a quad core and nVidia 9800 and it is amazing.Interestingly enough,I had no problems with bugs nor glitches, and I got the game when it came out.

The story missions are really fun although I'd say they were kinda easy compared to San Andreas. After completing the story, you can still do some things like car jacking for someone, assassination missions, kill pigeons ( easter eggs ), do stunts, plus you could even make your own GTA 4 movie using the Video Editor.

But on the negative side, it will tend to feel boring once you complete the story compared to San Andreas BUT this is where the multiplayer strengthens the game because GTA 4 Multiplayer offers a lot of game modes plus there are 3 co-op missions you can do with 3 other friends, there is a ranking system too where you collect money that are basically like experience points and the max level is 10. Every time you level up, you'll unlock new clothing , hair ****, beards etc. Oh yes, you can customise your multiplayer model too ;).

So, GTA IV singleplayer gets boring when you finish the story but multiplayer is tons of fun.

I can't say the game was bad, but it didn't have the same gameplay value as San Andreas. Other than that, I love it!

Id say the missions in gta iv are kinda... similar to each other, they lack the diffirent ideas and requirements san andreas had...
