When GTA IV came out and people screamed about how the game was so 'broken', I decided to hold off from buying until they release patches. Well, I've completely forgotten about the game and am a bit interested, but wondering if it is fixed? I have a Best Buy gift card so I can get the game for free, but should I ignore the game and get something else? Cheers. Oh, and just in case, my PC specs are core i7 920 no OC 6 GB of RAM 640 GB Hard Drive and GTX 260 Core 216 (no OC)

Its still broken, the patches do help but not enough. Theres a memory leak in the game one time you can play for 30 min without a hitch and then you can play it because of lag. Then the next time you start it up it can lag as soon as you start it.

To be completely honest, the performance woes seem like they are grossly exaggerated. With my system, I get near flawless performance on settings either medium or high at a resolution of 1440x900. And here are my specs:

  • E6600 Core2Duo
  • 8GB DDR2-800
  • Sapphire ATI4870 w/ 512MB RAM

The onlytime I get any slowdown is during missions where the game loads dialogue. Outside of that, the game is silky smooth.

You're using 64 bit Windows I guess? (32 basically only supports up to 4 GB of RAM.)

I was just wondering since I've heard stories of some games not working right on 64 bit. (I don't know what titles specifically.)

Anyway, of course if you have 8 GB of RAM you are less likely to notice a memory leak. You'd have to be playing longer.

It runs well for me ever since the 1.0.3.0 patch and I'm only running it on 8800GT 512RAM, 2GB RAM , 2.3Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo , all on high except Textures set to medium, view distance set to 45.

The OS I'm running on is Windows Vista Ultamite 32-bit. Hopefully this would have helped

Mine runs pretty smooth and I basically have the same settings as mhofever. It does start to lag though after playing for awhile (2 hours+) and exiting and restarting the game solves that. I will say the lag always comes but it always comes after at least 2 hours of playing. Sometimes it comes after 3 and the most I've seen was after 4 hours of playing it straight. Not bad I guess, but could be better. I never did get any lag though before the 2nd and 3rd patches. My specs are as follows: Intel C2D e7300, Asus P5QL-Pro, XFX 9800 GT, 4 Gb DDR 2, Windows XP SP3

Mine works pretty well. I've got 1280x768, medium textures, high for everything else, view distance at 40 and details at 50. In fact, I'm pretty sure my lack of ram is what's really holding me back from high textures and/or a higher res. ATI 4870 1GB AMD Phenom 2 X3 720 BE 2GB DDR2 Windows XP SP3

All of the outstanding issues have been fixed from my own personal experience. I have it running on 1440x900, all video settings on high aside from textures(medium), with View and Vehicle distance/density on 30, with object distance is only on 5. But for me that's awesome, because my rig is rather weak.

Yes, get it now, since the latest patch I have had no problems whatsoever, no crashes (which it used to do) and great performance on my GTX280. The game is absolutely stunning compared to the console versions, with extra options for shadows, water etc. I also set vehcile density to 100 and to see lots of cars around star junction is amazing. Get it, you won't regret it.

I just got the game today. I have a dual core phenom at 2.8ghz ati 4870 4096 memory and my game runs like balls. After building this machine I decided I would trade in my ps3 version for the pc version. The result was cars that looked better and better mouse controls, but "ok" frame rate and a blander looking environment. The game also likes to skip a lot. Maybe it is because I am on windows 7, but I have soooo many other games with high requirements that love the OS... so I think it is the fact that Rockstar got lazy with this release.
