Yes!!!! Buy it!!!! The Half Life games are amazing. The first one came out in 98 so it is a bit dated but still an amazing game. If the old graphics are getting to you just keep with it since Half Life 2 and Half Life 2 episodes 1 and 2 are from 2004, 06, and 07 so they look more recent. Trust me though you wont be dissapointed in this series. The game doesnt have check points you save often and I may just suck but there were times certain parts of the game where I kept dying whether it be from a boss or trying to get somewhere. This is one of the best PC games you can buy though so go ahead and buy it and start playing :) Half Life has to be the best first person shooter I have ever played.

half life 1 and 2 are amazing games. you could start on HL2 if you wanted and you would be totally fine, but HL1 is one of the most important games ever made so i would suggest not skipping it. with that said, remember, a lot of what made HL1 revolutionary at the time is now common place in fps. Stuff like not breaking the first person perspective, in game immersion, scripped events being used to tell stories the list goes on and on. HL1 elevated the FPS out of the doom/quake/duke nukem era. it was a revolution. Also it was a great game thats still fun today.

ENJOY

also HL2 is one of the greatest games ever made as well, so play that too.

Just buy The Orange Box. $20 off of Steam IIRC and comes with all of the HL2 games. You dont have to start off with the first one, many people didnt and the devs kept this in mind with HL2.

Yes I am just getting into the series too! I have downloaded and finished the first one from 98 and it was great and a little challenging. I'll be getting the rest of the series soon.

You can still grab the Valve Complete pack on sale today, which is a fantastic deal. I recently got it and plan on starting the series too. Just a question though, are Blue Shift and Opposing Force worth playing or necessary to understand the story? Or should I just jump to the second after I beat the first?

Half-Life 1 isn't just a good game to buy, it's a game you simply must buy; a classic work of the ages. It really is that good, and the proof of this is that the gameplay completely holds up even today. The graphics aren't going to thrill you, but they totally work as far as creating an interesting atmosphere that's fun to wander around in. The game is lengthy, extremely diverse, has great puzzles and combat, and incredibly awesome multiplayer to boot.

Just be sure you play the original Half-Life 1 and not the crummy remake, Half-Life: Source. It was supposed to be an upgraded "HD" version of the original game, but all they did was copy and paste the game into the new engine with some hideous "advanced" water effects and cheap ragdoll physics. Which would have been okay, had they not completely broken the controls and most of the weapons.

You might want to have a look at the Valve Complete Pack on Steam. It's on sale today only for just $50 - not a bad price for about a dozen of the best FPS games ever created and then some. That'll also get you the Opposing Force expansion pack for Half-Life 1, which is every bit worth playing as the original.

TL;DR: Yes! Buy it! :D

Half Life is a great game, very enjoyable. I found it better than Half Life 2 and I played HL2 first. I also got it for like $4 with opposing force and blue shift, which was a steal.

Neither half-life 1 or 2 have been able to keep me interested until completion. If you think that you would enjoy a slow-paced old-school shooter with a decent story then go for it. If you are expecting CoD or Quake then stay away :P

Forget everything you know and get the Valve pack ASAP.

Half life: Source - Play this first and Learn about HL universe and why Gordon Freeman is so awesome

Half life: Opposing Force - Play as the solider from a different point of view

Half life: Blue Shift - Play as the security officer from a different point of view

Half life 2 - Best game ever

Half life 2: Episode 1 - continue the epic story

Half life 2: Episode 2 - play this and hate Vavle for not making Half life 3 sonner

When you are done, buy acrowbar from your local hardware store.

There's really no reason to get half life source, all they improved was water and physics I believe.

There's no reason to get Source only if you already own Half-Life.

If you don't own Half-Life, you might as well get Source for the improvements in physics, water, lighting, and better graphics card compatibility.

I envy you about to play one of the greatest games in history for the first time. I remember my first time, it was glorious. HL1 that is.
