I'm hearing some more negative than positive on this game, so it's given me second thoughts on getting it. Personally, I hate random generated maps, so that's a instant turn off for me.

I'm addicted to Diablo II but Hellgate seems like a underwhelming successor.

Any thoughts on this game if it's disappointing or living up to the hype?

If you loved D2 then you will probably like Hellgate London. The gameplay is 3D WASD movement instead of point and click but it is very remincent of D2. I personally am having a blast playing it.

I bought the game today, it sure is different from anything I've played before. But it does remind me alot of D2, a pissload of monsters in the way, and your just ploughing through them. Yep there are bugs, however its nowhere near as bad as what I thought it would be after hearing all the commotion.

The game is extremely fun, and as soon as you log out, you want to log back in. As people have said the demo is a poor representation of the game. It's fun, it's different, and if you loved D2, your sure to get a kick out of it.

Side note: I'm finding the generated maps amazing - one time your in an open city space, the next time your in a spiraling sewer. Only problem with it, is that the monster positions can make the level way harder or easier than its intended to be. However it does keep you guessing, and makes the levels much less repetitive (since usually you finish an area, than your given a quest to go back, huzzah it's different!)

I'm actually surprised you didn't get more negative opinions...

I'm level 16 right now and enjoying the game very much. Apart from the excessive "freezing" megahitches - which have somewhat been helped by the most recent patch, at least in most maps - my only real issue with the game is that the maps aren't as big as the ones in Diablo, and certainly aren't on the scale of Oblivion or Guild Wars. But the combat is a lot of fun, much more so than any RPG I've played, only Oblivion's combat compares. And the big difference there is, this game puts a hell of a lot of enemies at you, so you'll get to use that combat system a lot more.

personally loved this game, great graphics, gameplay's excellent, although the map designs and settings can be a bit repetitive. Must buy for D2 fans.

Most of the negative opinions come from the spoiled gamer generation of today. Few of them have actually played the 1990's classics and, as such can't appreciate a spiritual successor to one of the best games of all time. All they look for in a game is good graphics, and that's why so many idiots call themselves 'Hardcore console gamers.' Does anyone else see the oxymoron here? They always compare this to games like Crysis and Gear of War with "Why are tihs gaem not nice grapihcs liek Crysis and Gears of War? Tihs gaim sux!" Despite Crysis and Gears being completely and totally different. Trendy gamers... I hate them with my entire existence.

I personally love Hellgate, but due to massive amounts of procrastination on schoolwork I currently don't have time to play it.

Bought this game thinking it would suck majorly but to me suprise its been cool. I LOVE d2 and this is a cross between guild war's (quests styles, communication, and area's by your self),and Diablo (random stuff, skill tree's,fast action not that slow crap from gw's :D). Currently have a level 8 summoner and am loving it.

Personally I love it...Only things I miss in it is full voice acting...And some other little things like making it little harder and stuff like that but I must say its addicting like crack or heroine. I dont have anything say about graphics if theyre good or not as on my comp they must be so low that they look like deus ex :D

People either love it or hate it. Imo it's no where near the addictivness and fun of diablo. Again, I'd suggest trying the demo at least to get a feel for the game... because, while it isn't a good representation of the final game, you will get a good feel for how the game plays.

Regardless... there are a boatload of unbiased (read: I'm not pumping the game to justify the $50 I waisted on it) opinions on metacritic.

I really enjoy it. Excellent gameplay and really addictive. Some dissapointments though...there are some bugs (this is being fixed). And one thing that can't be fixed, is the cinematics in between acts were total let down. I expected something along the lines of the opening cinematic between every act (like Diablo), but instead get something very underwhelming. That has to be my biggest gripe so far.

Still enjoying the hell out of the game though. Can't wait to get off of work and go home to play some more :)
