Diablo 2 and LOD (Get the expansion) has a pretty decent size community still playing online.

I suggest you play online if your going to play.

I just started BG 2 for my first play, last year. I thought it was going to be average at best, due to it's age, but it has aged well IMO. The graphics are good enough, and the game has a lot of depth to it.

I found it a lot of fun. I have to get back into eventually, (I had to stop because of I tend to get overwhelmed very easily and being new to D&D didn't help at all)

I suggest you get both. I still have BG 2 and exp installed on my computer. And I was thinking of installing D2 as well, if I can find my cds and the key.

Diablo 2 has aged extremely well, as far as I'm concerned. Visually, the game is every bit as horrible now as it was at release, but I like the animations and the visual style just works for me.

BG2 is a pretty sharp looking game when you stray out of the supported resolution territory.

And both games play as well now as they did at release - better, in D2's case.

So, in short, they look as good (bad!) as they did at release and they play as well, or better.

So, no, not too old.

Both are still VERY playable.

Diablo 2 for multiplayer, BG2 for single-player. BG2 is the best WRPG ever made IMO.

Of course, you'll get tons of hours in whilst playing both. If you want to really dig Baldurs Gate, play the first one though - story makes more sense.

Both are great games and a lot of people still play Diablo II online. I didn'tbeat Baldur's Gate II until last year. It was one of the best games I have ever played and I have spent quite a few hours playing DiabloII.

Baldur's Gate II is still one of the greatest RPG's ever made. It would be an insult to yourself as a gamer to pass it up. I myself need to find some time to get into it.

As of now, I have played through BG II + Expansion twelve times, the last playthrough ended in July.

The Infinity Engine aged well, I really wish they'd revive it. As someon pointed out above, you can crank up the resolution.

Still having a blast everytime I play it. So, yes, people still play the BG series and there are still mods being released.

Don't know about D2, though - I'm not a big fan of hack&slash.

It's not. There is much more focus on party tactics due to the D&D system being used.

There is also much more roleplaying involved.

BG2 is much much better than NWN in single-player, it took NN's 2nd expansion to make a worthwhile sp game. NN's strength is multi-player.

It is never too late to play thru Diablo or BG. These types of games had great graphics for the day but it all came down to storyline and gameplay. I still play thru old games like Ultima IV from time to time. Never judge a game on it's age, I have a strong feeling that people will be playing BG 1 and 2 for years to come even if they have to play them on Emulation.

I can still enjoy both of these games. Though I can't enjoy Diablo 2 Online anymore. Eventually all D2 turns into online is trade. Not only that but Blizzard has been lacking on keeping their old games in order, lots of hacks again and what not and it's all getting through.

BG2 will always be a great game in my opinion.

And though there have been mixed reactions, Hellgate:London is pretty much the D2 sequel and I'm lovin' it. :D

You really should play what pleases you... not what ppl think its new or old. IMO Shadows of Amn is the best rpg there is... but i play the "new" games too... if i were you i would play them but i wouldn't forget about the "new" games.

Oh right, I read his comment wrong, my bad. The intro movie for BG2 does a fairly good job of explaining the story thus far, but yes, playing the original first gives more insight and you'll also appreciate the npcs that make reappearances that much more.

I totally agree on that. Games don't really rely on game engine and graphics all the time (at least that doesnt apply to me). To me, what matters most is a good story line with good character development, which unfortunately is lacking in most games with stunning graphics nowadays.

Make sure to get the BG2 expansion, Throne of Bhall while you're at it too. I'm pretty sure there's a battle-chest type package that contains the original, the Tales of Sword Coast expansion (doesn't impact the story, you can skip this alltogether), BG2, and ToB. Shouldn't cost more than $40 either. If you do get the original as well, download this mod here to play BG1 with the BG2 engine and ruleset. The modding community is great for the BG series btw.

Both these games are part of your culture, you barbarian!

No seriously, they're totally different from games nowadays, I think. Well, especially BG2.
I was hooked on D2 for a pretty long time a few months back. (that is, considering how much I've already played it and the entire game a hundred times) and it was still just as fun as it used to be.
BG2, this game is just timeless. It's still my favorite game and I doubt anything is going to change that any time soon.
I actually played it a few years after it was released (was busy with D2 back then, heh).

I'd say that you definatly need to change you're way of thinking if you've just finished Crysis or something.
However, but these games are so bloodu great, you just need to play them. End of story.

P.S.: Both of them run perfectly fine on XP, btw. I installed BG2 again 2 days ago (considence or faith? ) but I didn't want to play any further because I knew I was going to have to quit and go to sleep eventually and get up early the next morning, and I knew there was no way that that would end well.
Search on the web, there's even a "use any resolution you want" mod. I'm playing at 1680x1050. :P

Both are sorta of the peak of two different types of rpg.. On one hand Baldur's Gate 2 atmosphere, characters, rpg elements, story, etc etc is phenomonal... While on the otherhand Diablo 2 imo has one of the deepest character devolpment systems ou tthere that more rpgs need to stride for.. The Talent tree is a stroke of genious when done right can have you make dozens of different characters with just one class...

I think thats a little harsh.. Diablo stories are pretty amusing specially with Blizzards award winning CGI.. And it imo has one of the most addictive and fun multiplayers to date.. I agree it is repetitive if you play by your self.. But I think the games main strength is in multiplayer.
