Is it not wise to use both ATA and SATA?

I just built my new rig and my hard drives are using an ATA cable and my DVD drive is using a SATA cable. For the life of me, I can't figure out why my Windows XP installation CD won't start and why Ubuntu won't start after I installed it.

I've been trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong and the only thing I can think of is my motherboard doesn't like it when I use both ATA and SATA cables.

Windows doesn't have sata drivers pre-installed so it can't see the drive. You need to first install with IDE then you can install sata drivers and use the drive.

My DVD shows up in my BIOS.

When I tried to install XP with IDE, the installation just sits with a black screen and does nothing. If I do AHCI, it just reboots the computer.
