Your system should easily run it.

Turn down the settings to some of them on medium might help a tad...

My wife plays Sims exclusively, I built her PC to play anything out there maxed out and it STILL runs like $%^&. It is just crappy coding.

Yes, mine does not lag (although I am using an SSD). I'm thinking it's maybe because of the SSD, but I would also recommend get Nraas Master Controller (a very easy to install which "cleans" all the useless things happening in the background in the sims 3, which in turn makes things run smoother). My game had started to freeze every 5 seconds, but after I downloaded the mod and chose to "reset everything" my game ran smooth as butter.

If it helps, I'm running a i7 930, 8gb g.skill, 5870 Vapor-X, on an Intel SSD, and when I play Sims 3 it can be a bit laggy at times as well with maxed settings. This is pretty much when I'm speeding up time 3x or 4x though. The picture can also be a tad choppy when panning the camera, which I don't experience in other games. It's not enough to make me never play it again, but it's annoying none the less.
