As the topic questions, is it possible? I currently have windows 7 on hdd. I am going to buy a new SSD soon and I need to upgrade to windows 10 before the end of the year or I will have to pay to upgrade the windows and I want that on the ssd. So, I was wondering if it's possible to upgrade to windows 10 on a new ssd from windows 7 on hdd.

Also, what do you guys recommend for SSD? What is the best 750+ GB SSD (or 500, depending on budget)? Or maybe should I get a hybrid of hdd and ssd? (I forgot what this is called). Any links would be nice.

I think the install is slightly different on HDD and SSD... As in stuff that happens beneath the hood.. sort of.

Why not do a clean install of Win 7 on the new SSD, then upgrade? Many here will recommend you to do a clean install of Win 10 anyway. The upgrading process might be more bugfree now than 4 months ago.

I would suggest a samsung SSD as mine has been great. Not the one I own but its 512GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147361&cm_re=samsung_850_pro-_-20-147-361-_-Product As far as I can tell they dont make a 750GB, after 512 it goes to 1TB

As for your first two questions, not only is it a better idea to do a clean install of windows 10, most people believe it is better to do a clean install when switching to a SSD as well.

Nevermind I googled it. There's plenty of guides. Thanks for the help. I know I could have googled before asking this but this is also a good place to find answers. And I knew I would get good responses. There are alot of very pc literate people on here lol.

Any more links to which ever ssd's you guys recommend would be nice and any good guide that you guys know of on how to make the switch and upgrade would also be nice.

this. Samsung's 850 Pro is propably the best consumer-grade SSD out there right now. Really fast and reliable, according to reviewers. I'm actually planning on getting that 512GB version soon for my Win10 shift.

i have read somewhere that you CAN do a clean re-install for freely upgraded Win10 afterwards, so yes, you should be able to do it. although i think you should first do the free upgrade on your old HDD, wich will grant you the license. EDIT: ah, you already googled it.

I decided to do a clean install right now on this HDD then migrate it over to the new SSD. Is this good or bad idea? What about doing this with EaseUS Todo Backup?

Btw, I just ordered a 1TB Samsung 850 Evo. :D

@sethman410: i think you should upgrade your windows 7 to 10 on your current HDD. then, using the microsoft media creation tool, make a windows 10 usb/DVD installation media.

then, do a clean install on your new SSD. as far as i know, the product key will be tied to your mobo, and a storage swap will let not interfere with a clean installation of windows 10 on your SSD.
