I have some pretty big game files I need to download from steam, Would it be safe to do this overnight?
I mean, Is there a chance it could catch fire or something?

No. Don't listen to the guys above. It's risky. Downloads are very resource intensive, and the fans automatically idle at night(so the computer is quieter). Your temps will skyrocket and it is very likely that the computer will explode or burst into flames. Don't chance it.

This. If you leave your computer alone, there is a 98.59% chance you will die.
After reading all of the sarcastic responses I'm guessing the general message is it's fine to leave it on.

Correction 98.69%!!! BE ADVISED!!!!! This is the most common cause of death in the world.Stealth pyros will infiltrate the computer when left unattended thus leading to a house fire. Yeah dont risk it.

What do you think people did with 56k or other terrible internet speeds when they wanted to download?

kraken2109
Yep.
Back in the 90s it was common for people to have a second phone line just for the internet. One weekend we wanted to test downloading a 1GB file using our 33.6 modem. We got about 80 hours in and then the connection was lost (I think it was at about 90%).
Other than that, files were much smaller back then. Also to mitigate some of the connection slowness, my best friend and I set up a sneaker net using my external zip drive between our 2 houses, we had a universal list that we would maintain. And we would communicate via AIM or if the download was long enough (1 hour+) we would just go to the other's house and play dreamcast.
