Is it a bad idea to purchase a used video card? Do video cards go bad after a while?

well, was thinking of purchasing a HIS ATI Radeon HD4890 1GB DDR5 off ebay from a person. He has 100% positive feedback with only 9 previous ebay dealings, and is claiming that its in perfect condition.. Its half the brand new price in stores. Feeling like its a good deal.

Sounds like a good deal. It's ok to get used cards, as long as they work.

comign from the view point of the seller, i recently (last year) sold two of my gpus on ebay, cited their age and what they were capable and they were purcahsed very quickly. if ur worried, just use paypal to buy them as u get more buyer protection. this card is probably less tehn 12 months old? if so ask if the guy has the receipt still jst in case u need any warranty claims.

Go for it. You can contact the seller and maybe ask what will be done if it doesn't work when you get it or if they will provide any kind of guarantee. And you will have some buyer protection from PayPal/ebay so I wouldn't be too worried.

I've bought used graphics cards before, and they all worked, despite being several years old at the time of purchase. (That's how I make depreciation work for me-dirt cheap used prices!) As for more recent stuff, as always, check feedback if buying online, and make sure it works before your eyes if buying locally. It can really pay off with some major savings if all goes well.
