I'm finalizing my mid range budget gaming build and can't decide on the final aspect. Should I get a SSD to top off my rig or not?

If I would get one it would be the 64gb crucial M4 or something similar to pretty much just put my OS on and a few other applications. Definitely no games on it, movies, or larger files. I know SSDs have been coming down in price but do you think the price drop and improved drives in the coming months will justify waiting for new ones and the hastle of reformatting once that time comes?

I would always recommend making that jump to a ssd, once you own one you will wonder how you ever got by without it, I would also say get yourself a 128gb rather then a 64gb, the price drop has been nothing short of insane. Got myself a 128gb ssd eight months ago and its now pretty much halved in price.

Personally I am waiting for a 256GB SSD that would be considered higher end to be about $.5 per GB and then I am getting that.

Refurbed 128gb is getting pretty cheap. You can always wait for the holidays. Depending on the mobo too you can shave your boot time to ~10 seconds range, no joke.

they are definately getting cheaper.

i picked up a 128gb m4 from ebuyer for £80. 6 months ago it would cost £140.

i would say its worth it now.

Does it really make that much difference in terms of real life performance?

The prices are dropping nicely, which is why I am waiting. I plan on using mine for music, Creating not just listening.

So I would need a relatively decent sized one. Last year I would have to spend over a grand for one that would actually meet that need.

Now I can get a 480gb, for about $450-$550. Next year I expect that price to reduce to close to half.

Now as far as which would be technically better, which brand/type etc. I think I will ask more specific questions regarding those things, in the audio engineering forums that I frequent, as I feel they would prolly know better for that Sort of specific field.

If you are going to be getting one for a specific field, like video, music. Then I would ask in an area like that from people that actually have experience from it.

It is like going from VHS to DVD. Boot up to windows login takes about 6 seconds, and as soon as you get into windows there is no waiting for stuff to load you can dive straight into your applications. All my applications also feel more snappy and responsive.

Unless you have a specific use for them, SSDs are just expensive luxury hardware. If you have a ton of junk loading up with windows, then yes it might make a big difference, but you could just stop those things from booting on startup. There are many other ways to speed up your computer. Also, SSDs can cause coil whine.

SSDs started getting affordable last year. You can pick up some decent ones now (like Crucial's M4) for less than $200 for the 256GB version.
