I dont quite get your question... I think it depends what are your other options, what else are you thinking on buying, or what do you have to play on... I've been always a big fun of console games.... nintendo, playstation console... but to answer your question, I like pc games, usually you wont get the same graphics, but you can get most of the console games on your pc... wich is quite good, since you can play a lot of games on your pc (you wont be able to get a few titles, but most of them, you can) if you like multiplaying games, those you play with people in the same place (not over the internet, or lan) like wii for example... the pc wont be your best friend, since its easier to play like that with nintendo wii... Well, hope my comment helps you, if not, sorry (as I said before, I didnt quite get the question) =)

PS: There are a lot of good games for pc

it is costly no dout. you figure a 1200$ "usa" priced rig right now, vista 250$,mobo 120$,cpu 200$,ram 200$,gpu 300%,case 40+$,psu 100$,hardrive 80$,dvdplayer 30$ and thats not counting if you need a monitor, keybord, mouse, speakers, soundcard ect. and thats just est and if you buy at least decant namebrand stuff that is at least mid range. a system like that if bought at the right time will more or less allow for high graphics for at least a year on most games and med to high for a year or so after that. then you will need to be pushing the graphics way down or upgrade. and thats just if some super duper shiney ultra hyped game does not come out with some feature that is a bigger step than normal. i have been saying for a while now that PC gameing is becomeing to much of a rich boys toy. or for the guy who does with out and spends every spare penny he can find on it. not so tough for the guys just outa school who still live with parents or roomates ect that dont have a family to feed or rent ect to pay. Any way it is pricey and you your self are going to have to figure out if its worth it. IMHO there realy has been a slump in great games for the PC of alte. and by that i mean games that i think is great. A 5 year old flight sim and its addons "IL-2" Oblivion,SH3 and upcomeing SH4 and a handfull of others. in truth console gameing is looking more and more the way for ME to go. though sonys sh** track record of hardwear failures starting with the first playstation i bought on release day and its replacment to the secound PS2 i had give me readdisk errors. and the current events with the 360 haveing major hardwear problems to Nintys lack of my type of games makes even the console section of the haobbie seems ...bleek. maby i should take up stamp collecting :(

Is there really such thing as a PC just "for games?" I expect any PC you buy will be used in a lot more ways than simply gaming (visiting Gamespot.com, for one, apparently).

that is a very good point. if you use it for alot of other things then yea that realy helps justafy the high cost but we were talking as a game platform. i have used my PC's primarly for gameing and web browsing plus watching movies all of wich can now be down by consoles. the sega dreamcast back in the day could be used to browsthe net. Also it should be said there are alot of up's as far as PC games go. nearly every PC game allows for save's anywear and dont forget the free mods. the very first PC game i ever bought was startrek bridge commander a 5 year old game give or take and not only are new mods being relased but some of the best ones have been made in the last year or so. so yea there are alot of plus's.

think of it this way, well the way I see it as of late PC games aren't really getting any better (or worse) requirment wise, i have a Gateway Desktop PC I got for Xmas (family pc) and it worked evreything great and thats about 3 years ago I am running Oblivion on it and it works fine, (though D2, and WoW aren't very  HD)

Yeah. Alienware. I mean, you can use the rig for doing all sorts of stuff, but its geared towards gaming.

Overall, I'd say go and buy now, unless you'd rather wait until quad-core chips become decently priced and then get a rig. It all depends though. If you want to play MMOs, then get a moderate rig now. Most MMOs aren't very tough on specs. I can run Guild Wars: Nightfall at full settings on my PC, and it's not very powerful. (2.4 celeron D OCed to 3, 768MB RAM, X800 AGP(it was slightly date even when I built it ~3 years ago)) I can also run Oblivion at med-high settings and FEAR at med-high settings too. Furthermore, if you're comfortable with computer and configuring hardware, buy the parts from Newegg. Assembling your own comp is so much cheaper than buying from Dell and (especially) Alienware. (though Alienware is now a subsidiary of Dell)

Dual core chips are very reasonably priced right now, DDR2 is the norm, and there are a lot of DX10 cards that are fairly cheap. So, really the only thing to possibly hold out on is either a newer generation of GPUs and quad-core price stabilization.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130082 = 8800GTS PCI-E for $289.99 (DX10 card)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103769 = AMD 64x2 (dual-core) 5400 2.8GHz for $266.99

Just remember that if you buy from Dell or any PC builder company, you'll be paying out the nose for your rig. The "gaming PC" market is starting to really ramp up and, IMO, the prices are massively overinflated because of so many kids wanting gaming PCs but not knowing how to build their own. Plus, the market is still fairly niche, so many companies can get away with charging whatever they want. IMO, Falcon Northwest is by far the worst at over-inflating sys prices. They build good comps, but they cost a lot. I don't know much about VoodooPC, but lots of people like them and speak well of them.

Before considering any pre-built system, I recommend going over to PC Mag.com and looking up their review of it. If you can't find that particular system, you can try asking in the Gamespot tech forums. The people there definitely know their stuff and even if they're not knowledgable of a certain system package, they can still advise you fairly well by what the sys specs are for that package.

Good luck. It's a jungle out there. :D

-edit- sorry for the triple post. GS just brain farted and then butchered my post. :/

Nah, I don't really buy that. Sure, there are companies that market in that direction--Alienware, Falcon, Vicious, and others come to mind--but most of the key features which make a PC game saavy also make it a better performing rig in every non-gaming application (a beefy CPU, a beefy GPU, copious RAM, lots of harddrive space and quality sound).

For the extraordinarily vast majority of PC gamers, I'd wager their "gaming rig" is also a home base for doing taxes, email, photo editing, digital music storage and procurement, web surfing, research, homework, job-related work, and so on. I'm sure there are some odd (and filthy rich) ducks out there who simply refuse to use their Falcon rig to photoshop a greeting card for Grandma, but really, that's not most of us.

Oh... and on that note, you're right: they DO make computers "just for games," but Alienware, Falcon, and Vicious don't. They're called CONSOLES.

I play PC games and DS games right now. I have a Gamecube, but I don't play it right now.
