I narrowed down to two ssd drives for boot drive.

Vertex 2 60gb @ TD $170 -$15MIR total (I dont like counting on it rebates)

Kingston 64gb @ frys for $110 total, Instore pickup.

The question is do I need the extra performance write/read from OCZ drives or is the Kingston good enough that itll beat my hdd.

Theres also Intel 40gb for 100, which seems to have godly response time, but slower write/read sequential for the rest. If I were to move files back and forth a lot than would that Intel model be too slow. I need a quick response for next day shipping if I were to order it.

I have an intel SSD 80GB version (gen 2) and it's nice and all... But my drive is slowing down now 33% fragmented. They don't want you to defrag these things. Only way to fix it is to format.

SSD is also bad for MMO's since they tend to wright... APB is really bad. Just over a month of playing that game it wrote almost 600GB.

But I wish I would have gotten a velociraptor. Cheaper, fast enough and more space.

hey don't you run that intel tool that "maintains" or resets the ssd back to normal performance levels? that's the alternative to defragging an ssd. you can download it from intel's site. it's called the "intel ssd toolbox". try it out dude, it really helps. i've got the exact same drive.

Velicaraptors (however you spell it) are crap, they are just loud. Samsung F3 is currently the fastest HDD out there right now.

EDIT: they are also overly-expensive!

Sure they might cost more and haver lower average read and write speed to the F3... But the access time on the VR is way better by HDD standards. Better then the F3.

Im in the same boat as you. I just ordered the Kinsgton 64GB about 2 hours ago (from newegg).

I look heavily into all those drives and considered all my options that are around or below $320. I saw some fantastically fast drives but only 32GB. I saw some that were 128GB, but didnt have very good controllers in them.

In the end, i looked at this: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/SSD/65

Essentially, the worst performing SSDs outperformed one of the best HDD's out there. I pretty much couldn't go wrong with any choice i made. I figured that i'll get my feet wet with a cheaper SSD to gauge the performance. Later down the road, (2 years or so) ill get a faster, higher density model.

Im going to install it on my laptop. If ever decide to get a higher/faster model, i'll replace my laptop's drive with that one, and use the Kingston 64GB for my desktop OS since i've got a 2TB HDD attached.
