I lost hope in my other topic. I'm getting my friend a rig and I want to include a GTX460 as a way to compensate for the i3-550 I'm putting there. I LIVE IN GAZA AND PARTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE AND PRICEY. So is this a wise idea? He will be gaming on that rig too, but he has a 1024x1280 monitor. Should I go for a GPU-Free rig and include some serious CPU power? In this case he will not be able to game whatsoever.

you have to priortize what do you need pc for. you friend is buying a gaming rig because he wants to game. but if you want to just use photoshop buying gpu is ill advised. the old computer i have has weak onboard graphic card(ati x200 chipset, 64 mb of memory partitioned from ram), p4 processor and 512 mb of ram. i know this is quite antiquated but my point is i can run adobe photoshop cs2 on it without problems.

so if you get good processor, enough ram, have good on board graphics card then using photoshop would just be fine. gpu's are used for intense graphic programs like cad and games. phototshop doesnt require much of gpu

Like I said in the other topic PS doesnt take much notice of your graphics card it will just eat your CPU and RAM, as long as your friend isn't doing heavy/billboard size work he will be okay with that set up. Maybe in the future increase the RAM to at least 12GB. If he's gaming then go with the 460 as it wont be totally redundant.

this sint necisarily true having even a absic gpu lets you play with adobe alot more than normal.

i recommend some nice cheap-o card like something from the sub 100 dolalrs US range

cards include

hd 5670, hd 4830, hd 5570, 4670, 3870, 5550, 4550, 4350, 5450, 3450, 3650, 2400pro. 2400xt, 2600pro, 2600xt, 4730, nvidia gt200 series, nvidia 9400gt, 9500gt, 9600gt, 9600gso, 9800gt, geforce 8000 series

such cards would dramatically improve your experience with photoshop and some of those sell for as cheap as 30 dollars US!

i know its not in your pricing but

Thats a hard decision.

A GPU will may add minimal or tremendous benefit to Photoshop. Filters are not GPU accelerated and the majority of them are not even multithreaded. All the new 3D stuff in CS4/5 and several operations (like crop, rotating images, painting with brushes, some HDR features, zooming) are GPU accelerated.

It depends alot on what hes doing. If hes going to be taking advantage of the new 3D painting capabilities in Photoshop, then yes i would recommend it. If hes only going to be sticking to "typical" use-cases like designing logos, letterheads, posters, t-shirts, etc. then the benefits of a GPU are fairly small.

If he is planning to use CS 5 Premier (the movie editor) though, then a powerful GPU is a must.

Thanks for the replies. I know that he is a designer in an ad company. He designs logos, posters...etc. He also told me that he will be using Aftereffects. The thing is, he has an old PC with a 9600GT. What do you think guys?

Since he's doing Ad stuff, means he needs to work with huge files. The only thing that will benefit him is more memory. The bigger the picture, the more memory he'll need. HDD space is a given, since RAW photoshop files, with all the layers and stuff go over 300MB+ I'm just basing these assumptions/numbers from post-experience when I used to edit pics for a Digital arts course I took at University and required us to make huge posters and a single visible pixelation would result is sour marks.

He already has HDD and isn't 6GB of RAM enough? Also from your experience, is it reasonable to invest in a GPU for this reason and just use an i3 processor?

You can never have enough RAM for Photoshop. 24 GB of RAM still isnt enough. I would rather up the ram to 12GB if possible before getting a GPU.

So let's compare these two builds for Photoshop stuff: CPU: i7 950+MB GPU: 9600GT. RAM: 6-8GB dunno how much we can afford. CPU: i3 550+MB GPU:GTX 460 RAM:6GB Which build is better?

Just to say, Intel supports Israel, just so you know. They have a factory built on stolen Palestinian land.

Ali also consider searching for i5-2500 processor, if u will find it Gaza get that

i5-2500 easily outperforms i7-950 and costs less.

@GazaAli

From your previous response it seems that he would be using mainly CPU-intensive applications. Are there any Sandy Bridges available in your area?

Sadly no. i7s are relatively new here. The problem with such "luxury" stuff is that, the people who sell them know that only a few people living in Gaza need/care for them, so they charge super high for them.

Yes but by buying Intel you are indirectly fueling the Israeli government. Intel also has a page on their website explaining their software acceleration porgram with Israeli businesses, but I can't find the link.

I haven't seen much of a difference between my 8800GTS and my GTX 460 in Photoshop. I think more RAM would net you more noticeable improvements, especially with 64bit PS.

He will need at least 12GB minimum and 16gb when he can get it, if he really is doing ad work he's going to need a bigger screen how does he get anything done? as with the HDD situation I hope he has a regular back up system in place if he's dealing with commercial.

Well we live in Gaza, so don't expect some over the top ad work. Its just some posters, covers, pamphlets...etc
