Okay so for my bday im getting myself some new upgrades. currently I have a AMD x3 triple core @ 2.1 ghz, and a xfx 9800 gt. Will upgrading to a x4 955 and a sapphire 4870 be worth it? And will that setup last me a good while?

The CPU - Yes! The GPU - NO! It's a small upgrade, even tho the HD4870 is quite a bit faster than the 8800gt i wouldn't get anything less than a HD5850. No both the CPU and HD4780 won't last you a "good while" they are both hardware components in the middle segment so when they are measured to current topsegment they dont stand a chance and most likely they wont last long when compared to better hardware, but the current setup you alredy got could serve you well another year. My recomendation is to wait untill current gen (HD58xx and i7) drops in price and upgrade when you cant play the games you want.

You will notice a decent performence boost if yoo go from a 9800gt to a HD4870 512mb/1gigbut it would prolly be better to get a more modern card like a HD 5770 1 gig or what stated above a HD 5850

4870 is actually faster than 5770. You should however get a 5 series card for DX11 support if nothing else.

I guess the cpu will be a good purchase if the speed is significantly higher than your current 2.1 ghz, but I have no idea how fast the cores are on the suggested one. GPU wise like the others have said it might be best to get a dx11 one or just wait for the price to come down on those as well.
