My specs are...

Intel E8400 (3.0Ghz) overclocked to 3.5 GHz
2 GB of DDR2 RAM
160GB Hard Drive
9800GTX 512MB Card

Should I....

A) Sell my PC on Craigslist for $600, put in an additional $700 down for this PC...

B) Keep my processor, buy 4GB of more RAM, new HD, new case, and an ATI 5870 for $700 down.

Well your PC can already run everything maxed I don't see why you should get a new one. These days it more about the GPU than the CPU. Heck my brothers got a single core P4 running at 3.7ghz and he can run crysis on high to very high 30-40fps with his 9800GTX, NO AA. If you have to upgrade just get a new GPU.

Also I don't see a reason for getting a new HDD and case. Also the difference between 2GB and 4GB is maybe 5fps tops if lucky.

I would just add 2gb more of ram and buy a 250-500gb Hdd. And keep your 9800GTX until the direct x 11 price wars start.

agreed

a fast processor is always nice, but frankly you got a dual core at 3.5GHz which is more than enough. Processors and multicores are still a bit overrated imo.

I would invest in a new graphics card and maybe another 2GB of memory if you have a 64-bit OS. Those two things should only run you 300 bucks or so

I'm gonna say; Go for an i7.
But replace your RAM with http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227365
Your case with http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119137
Keep your old disk burner if you have one or try and get http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151192
Or replace the HDD with http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136283
And then get http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121346
If you'd do it that way i think it would be a better deal =D A 650W Corsair PSU would be enough to power that system aswell tho.

It would be smarter to wait for fermi aswell and see if you could get more out of it.

I don't really think you need to upgrade tbh, the only thing I can really think needs changing is perhaps the graphics card in the future when it ocmes down in price, games aren't using much more than two cores anyway. And perhaps add on another gb or ram and that will be fine.

That's what I would do to. Save your money for after the i7 / Phenom 2 generation. You'll be glad you held out when the 8 core cpu's come out. Also your graphics card if fine to run almost every game maxed.

Get a new HDD, 2gb more DDR2, and a GPU once GTX 480/470 are released(price wars).

I'll definitely wait awhile then. I found something appealing though - if I did go with A, I'd be able to put in an additional 5850 when I wanted to upgrade again. Now wouldn't that be a powerhouse? Hah.

People keep upgrading for no reason I laugh at them because the Core2Duo's are still maxing most things perfectly fine. Some people like to waste their money so so be it.

The only thing that needs upgrades are your GPU and 2gb more ram.

Hell you can OC your CPU to 3.6 ghz.

Get an XFX 5870 that way if you ever decide to upgrade you get more for your money since it has double life time warranty. As for me I took advantage of the low supply of GTX285 and was able to sell my 2gb version for 450USD on amazon (yes it was listed as used but it was the only one up on amazon so I guess the buyer was desperate, funny part is I meant to enter 350)

Exactly. I want to future proof my PC, so to speak.

No reason for 4GB of RAM really. Everything on XP only needs two 2GB and there's no point in using Vista/7 if everything will run like crap.
