There are two basic reasons why people are waiting for nVidia's cards, which are 1) They could perform better (although not much so, considering the recent benchmarks released), or 2) a price drop on ATI's cards. In either case, you would benefit by waiting. But if you can afford an ATI card now, you probably won't be missing out on much.

IMO, the 5800 series is strong enough for the money to make it worth it, no matter what nvidia comes out with. I was an Nvidia loyalist for 6 years before I got my 5870, and it's such a beast I can't regret it.

Any fanboy will say "BUY THE ATI CARD NOW". Any sane person will say wait because either way it's a win situation. Nvidia releases a kick ass card and you buy that, or you buy one of the great ATI 5xxx cards for a lower price. Wait it out if you can, it's only a month.

If you're building a new PC and need a video card right now, I say buy it now. If upgrading, wait.

Why? If the OP can float for a couple of months with his current hardware, he could potentially save a fair sum of money when Fermi comes out.

Just a little addition, if you only have enough dollar for the 5770 or 5750, then wait, and get a 5850 when the price falls.

Considering the die sizes of Fermi and humungous, and the performance is questionable... I'd just say go for a 5x series now. I am sure Fermi will perform a bit better, but the amount of heat and power, and not to mention the price I don't think it's worth it. Oh and no triple monitor support with 2 of those things. Yeah... no.

i want a die shirnk from all companies. its geting rediculous. we bought a gtx 275 last year and teh damn thing is almost as long as my arm. compare it to a 9500gt in size! wow what a difference. i dont want gigantor power sucking cards anymore for 22" gaming. i want to replace my 4850 late this year but not pay extra $$ on my power bills!

Ha - I had a recent debate in a locked topic about this, my answer is, as it the GT100 launch signify TSMC's 40nm yeild inprovements which will cause an influx of not only Nvidia's new card, but also the 5k series from ATI. This will bring about price wars and price drops.

Some early Fermi benchies found here

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/27892-nvidia-s-geforce-gf100-under-microscope-13.html

Take into consideration this:

Fermi performs 120% better than the GTX285 @ 2560x1600 with 4xAA

Fermi performs 38% better than the 5870 @ 2560x1600 with 4xAA

the 5870 performs only 50% better than the 4890 @ the same settings.

The real concern is pricing, as we all know Nvidia's idea on that.

Fermi is 40nm, and so is the current 5k series from ATI. A die shink is not going to change the size of the card, only the actual die inside the GPU. They still have to pack in memory, fans, and billions of transistors, voltage regulators. The cards are huge, but that may signify time to upgrade the case as cards are going to get smaller until all those other parts do.

If you don't need a new graphics card now, well then you can afford to wait... it's quite simple.

Keep in mind as well, but ATI has already announced their next move. Before Nvidia has come out with their promised holy grail. This game of waiting is kinda a never ending circle or releases and one upping. http://www.techpowerup.com/113711/AMD_Plans_Successors_to_Evergreen_Series_GPUs_within_2010.html

It should be an interesting few years. With Intel's settlement with AMD, ATI should have some extra cash floating around. With Nvidia getting a jumpstart on the whole GPGPU Computing trend/world before it has a full market, thus ensuring their placement in a non-gpu dependant graphics market, etc...,etc... Hopefully us as the consumer will reap the benefits. I would hate to see both parties use these advantages of theirs to merely milk us for more.

You should also think about the Nvidia PhysX that carries the GTX series.

I say wait, you'll never lose anything since the prices will go down by then.
