I am upgrading my computer to a high end computer with a GTX 295 and all that. However i have a motherboard which can take core 2 (quads as well) but now core i7 are out i was wandering if it's worth getting a new motherboard etc to get a core i7. I want to be able to play all the upcoming and latest games like GTA4 and flashpoint 2 on full for at least a year. Will a core i7 be needed for this? Is it worth getting a phenom or waiting fore a core i5, if so why? Will these work with my core 2 motherboard?

Well, the i7 is almost as the Quads in term of gaming, but it really shine in multi applications like Photoshop for example, so if you want it for gaming then I don't recommend you to buy it because its gonna be a waste of money. and about the Phenom I really don't know because i'm not an expert in AMD stuff.

if you have the money then yes it is worth it, i dont know why people are saying it doesnt increase performance in games it does. for example i went from 2.8 ghz dual core and 4850 1440x900 gaming to i7920 stick speed with the same 4850 and went up to 1900x1080 24in and my fps went up with every game i ran before.

If you're the type that upgrades on a regular basis, then I'd wait on building a core i7 unless you have the money and don't mind parting with it lol. If you're the type that only upgrades once in a long while, then core i7 cpu's are a worthy purchase imo.

I guess if you have money to burn or throw out the window, then go ahead. Why not just get a cheap E8500 C2D and play all games just fine?

I will answer you in a form of a question.

Are you a gamer or enthusiast?

Do you have money and dont mind spending cash?

Do you build your PC or do you let the surplus shop do it for you?

Ask that to yourself and your conscience will tell you if your going to buy that i7

Cheers
