its not, but it has a really wide appeal being almost a shooter. Heck Id call it a shooter with alot of rpg elements, not an rpg with alot of shooter elements at this point.

I like the combat in ME2 better than in BGII. I don't think that RPG should have to be synonymous with boring and uninteractive combat anymore. Other than that, it certainly is not the best RPG on PC. But it's still pretty good.

I prefer the strategic combat of bgii, you cant call it non-interactive just because it isn't action based.

Me2 is a very good RPG game. but I think that they greatly miss balanced the exploration of the planets is you survey one cluster you have a ton of materials. that get the ideas fir upgrading and do it. I found it a bit easy to get all the ship upgrades

Sorry, Duke Nukem Forever Holds that title, lol.

Anyway, as far as I know, its up to the standards of the world currently. this stage in gaming, after something like MW2, people are aching for a fluid shooter with a great long story where you actually help progress the game through other actions besides killing also. It just so happens that ME2 gives that to players, so naturally people rate it high. bring someone from the RPG age of games and gave the game similar graphics and he would probably give it only a 7.0 .

It's a great game. Not as good as Baldurs Gate 2 though. I liked it more than Dragons Age though, I liked the characters more and the combat is pretty good instead of just ok (I don't get why they made DA combat more difficult to master than Baldurs Gate and worse and made it less interesting to watch than Knights of the Old Republic, it's like playing a single player MMO).

I love Mass Effect 2 but even I would say calling this the best RPG of all times is stretching it. The RPG elements in this game are very "minimal" in fact you could play this game and complete it successfully without ever paying any attention to the RPG elements. It is a great game though just not a major RPG game.

KOTOR is overall much better than the Mass Effect IP. ME only wins if you're comparing sci-fi action games, and that's cause I don't really play sci-fi action games besides ME, so I wouldn't be able to make an informed conclusion.

Sci-Fi > Fantasy
Guns > Swords
Intergalactic warfare with ancient spaceships > LOTR clone(ish)
Original alien creatures > reallllllly old humans, dwarves, elf's and orcs....oh and dragons.

Nuff said.

If that is really the only thing that makes it the best game ever created, i feel its going to be topped in 2406 due to the fact that it will then be considered Fantasy, Guns will be much inferior to Mutated Body parts, Intergalatic Warfare will be nothing to between dimensional war, and Original Aliens will go the same way as the Martians went.

Really, though, some people out there are actually tired of Sci-fi in general, such as myself. Watching Star trek at the age of 4 and playing almost every Star Wars game does that to you. Still, that does not mean I don't think the game is great and original.

Well getting technical Star Trek isnt Sci-Fi, its fantasy! Being honest i have never played KOTOR, my wife keeps telling me to play it because she loved it.

I wasnt being too serious with that list, its mostly just my personal preference...although DA:O's story is a bit too similar to LOTR's :D I think the thing with ME is that it has a LOT more mass appeal (not pun intended) because of mainly the gameplay and also because of the setting.

Trust me, i wasn't serious at all either, lol. Just trying to say that opinions are great, but the "'nuff said" remark left it up to question as accepted truths, so i just went with my cannons up in natural response, i guess :P . I know you get that Alot of people buying a game does not making it good, but alot of people online saying good things about it does not make it the best we have seen so far either. Not all people like us speak their mind about games and accepts the world (which currently loves the whole shooter craze) as it is. And yes, DA:O is similar to LOTR, but It obviously did somethings right because i love DA:O while the LOTR books and movies were really sub-par.

It's certainly my favourite. Finally an RPG I like more than the original Fallout.

You can compare mechanics all day long, it's irrelevant since the genre is so diverse.

they got the balance of shooting/adventure/rpg just right but because of that its hard to pigeon hole it into one particular category. its definitely one of the best hybrid games

I prefer mass effect to Dragon Age personally, mainly because DA feels to familiar. But Planescape: Torment still is #1 in my book. Kotor is probably my favorite Bioware RPG to be honest.

I am picking up Dragon Age with my next pay and I am playing KOTOR right now so i'll see how they stack up. I have heard many good things about Planescape but finding a copy is pricey and hard.

@OP..

NO !!!!!!!! It is not even close...and if you were bored with ME 1 ( Like me ) I'd wait for a price drop to try it out..

I might play it some time down the road...but I won't loose sleep if I never do.

ME 1 was boring...repetitive...and kinda ugly. They say the 2nd one is better though...we shall see.

As awesome as ME 2 is, i miss the scope and epicness of the first game. I also think the stat system could be incorperated into the new inventory/upgrade system (you get % upgrades, but you don't know what they are on top of!).

having said that, the side quests are sooo much better, as is the combat (although your squad mates still seem to have path finding issues).

I wouldn't say its the best PC RPG, i'd still give that to The Witcher, but it may very well be the best genre hybrid since the original Dues Ex.

I thought the "scope and epicness" hurt the first game. You were Captain Awesome saving the galaxy, yet you took your sweet time to solve the most petty problems. It didn't really fit. ME2 knows exactly what it wants to do and it's brilliant. And freaky.

I wonder if Deus Ex 3 will match the awesomeness of ME2, and how does Alpha Protocol's gunplay compare to this.

It wasn't the 'saving the galaxy' part of the first that wowed me, rather the'holy crap' moments that occured at the end of some of the major missions (sovereign/the reapers). I know it was ripped straight from Star Trek, but i still loved it. It did make it near impossible to go off and do side quests, but the side quests were so crappy in ME 1 that it didn't really matter. I don't like the story missions in ME 2 as much as i did in ME 1, but ME 2 is a better game overall because it actually gives you lots of chances to go off and do side quests, and they are actually worth playing this time around.

I don't think anyone knows anything about Dues Ex 3, we'll just have to wait for previews to give us some idea.

I think Deus Ex 3 will be a bad game, maybe not as bad as the second game but not as good as Deus Ex. They are going too far away from what the original was IMO but I guess we will see. I don't hope it fails, but I have very little faith in it right now.

This is a dumb claim. ME2 isn't really even an RPG, it's a 3rd person shooter with some dialogue choices and different paths. You don't "role play" anything. Baldur's Gate 2 is among -if not THE- best RPGs ever produced simply because it allowed a nearly-infinite range of role playing while offering a huge world.

WoW has more Excel spreadsheets than BG2 and a bigger world.

Drakensang is more complicated and allows more options than DnD.

Are they better?

These are just the gameplay mechanics. ME2 has very clever mechanics, although not as many.

It's the opposite of Dragon Age, which took the quantity over quality approach.

Don't compare apples and oranges. Was your experience better? That's what matters.

? Dragon Age is of higher quality than mass effect 2 imo. The gameplay in mass effect lacks any real depth.

If it wasn't for the cold, soulless approach to, uh, everything, the almost useless skills and the meaningless, repetitive sections that simply didn't know where to end, I'd say it was a better game. Even without taking into account the terrible lore.

DA is the epitome of mathematical rewards. That's the RPG "school" promoted by DnD, where everything is governed by stats and where tedium is ignored because you know your stats increase. I think Jonathan Blow was the one that called this "false rewards". I don't say it's wrong - thinking about it, it's a lot like knowing everything about your favourite car or football team - but I preffer a more abstract experience that doesn't emphasise *how* the game works, but *why* it plays like it does.

And ME2 doesn't lack depth, dammit. It just lacks dice rolls and back pats when you kill an enemy, everything else is player controlled. They hide the mechanics well. Pay attention to how the economy, the weapons, skills and exploration influence each other for example. It's a bloody clockwork in the background!

If it wasn't for the cold, soulless approach to, uh, everything, the almost useless skills and the meaningless, repetitive sections that simply didn't know where to end, I'd say it was a better game. Even without taking into account the terrible lore.

considering Bioware has made a better RPG a few months earlier than ME2, no I wouldnt call it the best PC RPG of all time. I would hardly even call ME2 an RPG, it has more in common with Gears of War than an RPG.

As far as depth goes, to me that means (without getting into specifics), how replayable a game is. Replayability can be acheived in several ways.Truely great RPGs can be played over and over again and it's different experience each time. I'm keeping an open mind on ME2, I picked it up on steam yesterday but haven't started it yet. I only got one and half play throughs out of ME before I got bored. Whereas KOTOR and BG2 gave me several and each time it was a great experience.
