I just saw the GOTY edition for cheap, and wondered if it was still worth picking up, since I never played it before.

The blurb says that 3rd party mods may not work on this version (no idea why). Is that a deal breaker? Does the game need mods to be playable, or are they just a nice addition?

huh? mods dont work? Well anyway if its worth playing mainly depends on if you have played the others or not. Me? I would play morrowind any day over Skyrim / Oblivion. The gameplay is different its based on character stats rather then player skill. But even then the gameworld / story / quests / factions / stats / skill are all much better in Morrowind then skyrim or oblivion. Anyway there are some mods like "better graphics" and so on that i would recommend. Then if you want there are balance mods and just other mods in general depending on what you are looking for...

My all time favorite game.  Getting close to a 1000 hours logged in and still have yet to do and see everything.  Amazing game imo.

Yep! Fantastic game, trust me, it delivers an outstanding experience. Worried about graphics, download Morrowind sounds and graphics, a huge modpack that makes the game look a LOT better.

IMO it's one of the most atmospheric games ever made. Unlike Oblivion or Skyrim, the environments and dungeons feel 100% handcrafted and are complete with intricate details that only the most observant gamers would uncover. With the expansions and mods, it feels like the roleplaying options are limitless. The combat is reminiscent of Diablo 2, but in a FPS form (clck-based hack and slash based on RPG variables rather than skill).

Yah, I was about to get it on sale weeks ago and read some forums comments talking about how great it was and I was about to purchase, but as they went into more and more detail, I was saddened in that this type of game doesn't fit into my schedule anymore. 10-15 years ago, it would have been perfect as I had much more free time to play games, but now I only have an hour or so a day to play and lack of features such as "fast travel" would keep me from getting anything accomplished in a play session.

I understand how "fast traveling" can hinder the game world's vastness, but unless you have a lot of time to devote to playing, it can hinder progression as well.

Tried to play it twice. Always comes down to that rat mission at the beginning, where i swing my weapon and can't hit the damn things, it pisses me off and i delete the game. The end :)

You don't need to devote hours a day to the game to get enjoyment out of it. I think it's best enjoyed 1 hour at a time. What the hell does fast travel have to do with anything? Morrowind isn't really about getting as much done in as little time as possible, I think you have the wrong idea about the game...

Might as well steer away from all RPGs altogether :P

I tried to get into morrowind but sadly I could not. The combat system is not skatedirt friendly and the world is so dead and bare. Ill probably get trash talked for this but its just my own personal opinion.

It feels like a pre pre pre pre pre alpha of skyrim

It's an all time classic epic journey to be told and to be experienced and withhold, moreso with it's two add ons Tribunal & Blood Moon so you should get it, the basic content of it has more than enough of 100 hours to be played.

But it's strange that mods won't work on it, for that's what can easily flesh out the game to 1000 and more hours, and goddammit, there are some awesome high quality mods for it (one for example is an optional completey story changer from the second half of the game, or there are masses of mods that just add complete new adventures or other optional nice stuff like new houses etc.)

Well excuse me sir, but he said that mods MAY not work, he didn't say they will surely not work. So he can always try because the modpack is free ;)

Of course it is worth it, it had alot longer replay value for me personally than Oblivion or Skyrim.

Also a good amount of mods out there now to. Controls, animations and graphics might not be as good as in the new ones but the game world, exploration, atmosphere, replay value and especially ROLEPLAYING is much better in Morrowind imo. Has alot more soul for me than the two latest elderscrolls had to.

It was just on the Gamefly website: http://www.gamefly.co.uk/Download-Morrowind-Game-of-the-Year-Edition/5002126/ "The downloadable version of this game may not be compatible with 3rd party modifications." Anyway the sale is off now, and I'm not spending £15 on a game that came a decade ago. I'll wait for another sale.

Yeah I recommend you to wait, but once you see a good deal, quickly grab it

The walking animation still cracks me up.  But regardless, its still a great game worth playing even today.
