my specs are in my sig

and i just wanna know when my computer will not be able to play latest games, but i will be changing my GPU after i see some benchmarks of the 9 series

but i will NOT be changing anything else, maybe a little OC on the CPU if i need to

and i used to have a 6600GT+Pentium 4 and that ran most games at 1024x768 at i think around med (except for crysis)

im hoping ATLEAST 3 years and maybe 4 but thats pushing it a bit
anyway i'll be out of school in 4 years and will have saved up for a pretty high end PC by then, assuming i dont have to pay for my car, thats what a father is for, lol

Unless someone here is a psychic its hard to say. It could be in 6 months, or more realistically about 2 years. Really no way to tell. If for some reason Microsoft pulled another DX10.1 stunt, and it wasn't compatible with DX10 cards then that would significantly reduce the life of all the GPU's on the market currently, considering at somepoints support for DX9 will fade.

QX6700
8800 GTX in Tri SLI or 3870X2 in Crossfire

yeah you know as well as I do how the computer industry goes. Hard to tell. What if Tri-sli is just a fad and never catches on? Thats why I dont really like futureproofing rigs with just released technology. For instance DDR3 cost so much, and its not even really optimized to be used with games yet. In 2 years we could have 2GB GPU's 8 core processors, 10TB drives, I mean its endless what we "could" have. So I would say that its really a question of opinion.

yeah i guess :(

but i never get why people get the "best" stuff when in 2 week *sarcasm intended* a new thing will be released that is better,

i mean im 14 (nearly 15 yay!!!) so i dont have the most amount of money but my dad is one of the CEO's at Kia, and so he isnt poor, even though he likes computer/games aswell he never wants me to get the newest stuff!!!

he has a good setup aswell but he never let me get SLI 8800GTX's when i got mine cause he said it was a waste!! he goes with ATI when i prefer Nvidia, he was soo happy when the 3870X2 came out, lol

All you need to change for later is the GPU, your Q6600 is totally fine. Current video games do not use all 4 cores but maximum 2 cores, so we need to wait for a real Quad core support game and then decide to change the CPU or not.

PS: Your PC is not crap cuz I have a 8800GTS 640mb and you have a 8800GTX and I dont say that my PC is crap... lolz xD

That's a very nice copmuter that'll last you a long time before needing an upgrade. :)

Cop: You have the right to remain silent!

You with your copmuter: No no. You have the right to remain silent. "Enable Asus CopMuter Function"

Cop: mouth moves, but can't be heard.

You: Copmuter saves the day again!

How can we tell you what to do in 2 years? When you start feeling like your computer needs an overhaul, upgrade. There's no way for us to tell if that will be in 2 or 4 years.

BTW, your Dad is smart. He spent over $400 on a video card as it is, there's no reason you need SLi'd GTXs right now.

yeah lol, my dad is smart, but i just wanted a mad ass set up, i mean i wanted to go crazy and get Tri SLI and all that, i only wanted all this cause i used to play all ma games on my dad computer cause my old one was sooo damn crap,

but, i know my new set up is good, for now, lol,
we all know how this is, one week a new "fastest" GPU comes out. and then next month a new better one comes out, that is the only problem with cmoputer gaming, if you want the best graphics

but thanks guys, i might get a 9800GTX when it comes out, if ma 8800GTX cant cope, but im waiting for the benchmarks first

Easy. Upgrade CPU and/or graphics card halfway through those 4 years (maybe add a gig of RAM along the way as well, depending on whether it is worth it in the future) and then get a completely new system. Your current system will definitely be enough for 2~3 years, maybe 4, but in its 4th year it will be playing games in the low end of detail for sure. Thus, upgrading CPU and/or graphics card (probably only graphics card...a 4-core cpu should go a longer way than your graphics card) would be beneficial in providing a boost for that end of 2nd to 3rd year before you get a completely new system. Too much money and a little more hassle to get new systems every 2 years.

Don't get a 9 series card..it's way too soon to upgrade considering you have a very good 8 series card. Also keep in mind that you want to watch out for the very best looking time to upgrade, rather than just upgrading at a time because you feel like it.

i might wait a bit for a 9 series considering the price,
unless i can sell ma 8800 GTX for 3/4 of that price

I would say that, with some wise upgrading, you could get your system to last 5 years. The 8800GTX is more than enough for now. A lot of people immediately deem a graphics card obsolete when it struggles to cope with the latest, most graphically intensive game on the market, but you have to keep in mind that games like Crysis are the exception, not the norm. The Q6600 will last you quite some time if you overclock it, especially if future games become Quadcore optimized. You may need to add some more RAM in the future, but that should be a relatively painless and affordable upgrade. Have fun gaming and don't go into an upgrade frenzy!

Why the hell are you even asking this question, your computer is very high end don't even think of upgrading unless you just have ridiulous amounts of money that you want to waste. With a Q6600 you should be fine for a while, especially once games really start utilizing all those cores, which they should soon, if not already. Not to mention you have an 8800GTX.

If you want to make it futureproof heres what you do:
1. plan a computer/upgrades that you can afford right now or in a few months.
2. do not buy that computer/upgrade.
3. save money.
4. wait a 1-2 years, or until your computer stops playing games at how you want it to play them.
5. spend that money on a new video card and/or cpu(probably won't need cpu as you have a Q6600).
6. repeat.

Acually forget that.
1. buy a new pc
2. sell me your old one for extremely cheap

(I WISH I could have a computer like yours.)

If you'll be upgrading to Vista, you might as well go 64-bit. Then just upgrade to 2X2GB. You probably don't need to do this for at least another year or so, 2GB is still plenty for XP.
