My system:

6600gt (PCI-E)

1gb RAM

350W PSU

It runs most games pretty smoothly, but when playing the WiC demo it constantly freezes. Im guessing its because of the crappy CPU. Is there any upgrades I can do w/o replacing the motherboard?

You could try overclocking. :P

Indeed, your computer is just getting older and games are moving forward. Single core CPU and a 6600 card...

UPG to a higher socket 939 CPU, pref a dual core, I don't know AMD systems and I duno if higher CPUs need DDR2 or not but I'm sure you can upgrade.
PCI-E? Upgrade your graphics...

Get an AMD X2 6000, if your motherboard supports it.
Get an 8800GTS 640MB or 7900GT 512Mb if your motherboard supports it.
Get a PC Power and Cooling PSU. PC P&C are expensive but I hear they are the best, I use a 750 watt and I have no problems with it.
Get 2048Mbs of memory, I would recommend 4096, I don't have 4X1024 yet, want some for my birthday... or a saitek joystick since my Wingman attack uses an interface so old that its not supported anymore... lol

You could get more ram, a new video card, and possibly a PSU with more wattage.

Well this is my motherboard I guess

And as for the CPU, would this be a good upgrade?

The Good news in youre motherboard supports PCI-Express the bad news is that opterion youre looking at is probbly a little slower than that CPU dur to the fact it uses a slowe HT Speed. Just go into youre Bios and find the FSB and take it up some

EDIT:: Get this!!! Link

EDIT 2:: Or if you have $90 GET THIS DUAL CORE!! Link

Would OEM be a bad buy? I mean like, would it last just as long as the normal retail version? Also, by looking at the picture, it doesnt come with the fan and stuff. So would I have to buy a new one? Or could I just reuse my current fan?

All OEM really means is that it is missing the original packaging. I have bought OEM form Newegg before, and I freakin' excitited about it everytime. Just amke sure that if you are gonna overclock ANYTHING in your PC, that you cool it well.

As for a rec. upgrade, go Graphics Card. there are alot of good, mid-range PCI-E cards out there. See what you can find.

Well, Im not planning on overclocking anything. So can I just the fan I have now? Also, do I need thermal glue? Or does the CPU just snap into place

Your PSU sounds underpowered did you get it with your case? I upgraded mine and haven't had any reliability problems since.

Your old heatsink and fan should be ok (providing you are not going to be doing any overclocking) for an athlon 64 single core, yes you will need to get some thermal interface material like arctic silver thermal grease and something to remove the old interface material completely.

Besides you can get some relatively cheap heatsink and fans anyway, the ones provided in the full retail packages are fine provided you don't try to put them through too much ie overclocking.

Hmm...

http://youtube.com/watch?v=Yn14oA6Db4k

Judging by this video all you do is wipe the grease off with a cloth, and not use chemicals?

Oh, screw it. Ill just buy a cheap heatsink on newegg. BTW, that +4200 is at $72 now. Is that a good deal for what its worth?

It says you shouldn't use alcohol or acetone, the one I showed you is citrus based and safe. The reason why you should use it is if you have the old grease still on there at all it impairs the ability of the new grease to do it's job.

Your CPU is severely UNDER clocked. The HT on a socket 939 is 1 ghz (standard) and not 795 mhz. Even the socket 754's support 800 mhz HT. You can easily clock your processor a couple hundred mhz higher than it is right now, as well without worrying about stability problems. My Athlon 64 3200+ which is Socket 754 clocks higher than your 3400+ socket 939 and my chip is running at factory settings.

You don't need to overclock it, well not really. You'd be clocking it higher than what you've got it clocked now but it's under clocked from factory settings. Go into your BIOS and change your HT setting to 1 GHz. Change your Bus Speed to 200 Mhz instead of 199. Now your CPU will clock at 2.2 GHz with a HT Link of 1 GHz, which is the standard clock.

When I go into the bios, the CPU settings are disabled. Theyre grey'd out, but everything else I can change. BTW, its a prebuilt compaq, so maybe they disabled it? What can I do?

With some boards you just cannot adjust things like clockspeed, compaq like ms with their 360s make their systemsto be as cheap as possible and sometimes that leads to issues. Personally I would try to salvage some of the components and start again with a fresh self build.
