Is my GTX 1070 underperforming?

I just got a GTX 1070 and am not sure if it performing as it should? I get between 40 and 60 FPS in fallout 4 at Ultra settings preset and several other games run in the 40's to 60 FPS range, while most games stay at 59-61 with a 60 fps average, at max or near max settings. My basic specs are:

Gigabyte H97 lga 1150 motherboard

16 GB ddr3 1600 Ram

Intel core I5 3.4 GHZ

750 watt PS

Gigabyte G1 GTX 1070

Yes, very much so. Especially at 1080p

You should be able to run every game at 1080p/60fps max detail settings (excluding AA) with a 1070. Run the 3D Mark Firestrike benchmark and see what your GPU score is. You should get around 20,000 or more depending on the overclock.

BassMan's first sentence is spot on. As for synthetic benchmarks, they may not be that big in the helpful dept. Granted, every game is different and Fallout 4 can be a bit of a hog. Not the best game when it comes to optimization (I have dipped below 60fps a coplue times whle playing at 1440p and thats with Dual 1080's so....

That seems normal.

Not sure what you did there with Fallout 4 settings but you should be able to get 100fps

I bet your monitor is capping your fps since it's 60Hz + Vsync it won't go above that, you can turn Vsync off to get more fps but you'll result in screen tearing - I'd recommend on new gaming monitor with 120+ Hz and if you've got a little bit more to spend then with G-Sync as well.

I turned V-sync off but left it on Ultra settings, It did improve my performance quite a bit, still not as good as the videos above and not what those benchmarks show, but I was able to get it to go at much higher framerates though it still does sometimes drop into the 40's and 50's but peaks in the high 90's. I do have a 60 Hz monitor though so it is not always perfect looking at frame rates above 60 FPS, I will at some point get a better monitor as my budget allows. It's not underperforming at all.

Fallout 4 is running on a POS of a engine that Bethesda needs to take out back and put down humanly.

I get around 70-100FPS in some area's and in other area's it can drop down to 50FPS.

So relax your beautiful GPU is running as it should.

I'm currently playing Fallout 4 and having the same issue and its really annoying. It just randomly drops frame rates in certain areas.

The sad part is because its engine based the chances of this ever getting fixed is very low, the only way around is brute power a card that if it does frame drop is so powerful that it doesn't dip past 60FPS.

I saw 40-45FPS for some strange reason by some radiated barrels... Walked passed them went back to 70FPS+.

Usually if a card is faulty its not a performance related thing it either gives you random BSOD or lots of artifacts.

In 3 seconds the frame rate goes 81 to 48. Once he walks past the building it jumps back up to 80FPS. Also look at the GPU usage drop.

The game engine is just a mess... And his card is fine.

yup fallout4 is a mess, my fps goes from like 38 to 90+ on oc'd 980ti on 1440p

@pcgamer8084: Not sure if you already did that but keep your GPU driver updated and the game fully patched.

Fallout 4 is very cpu heavy afaik, so that is most likely your issue.
