I want to upgrade my system, but I'm wondering if this Motherboard is too old for the new stuff like i5s and 6870s.

Ok...can someone recommend me a decent motherboard that won't be outdated in 2 years?

Probably should wait for bulldozer. Intel likes changing sockets alot.. AMD not so much.
Whats the point of upgrading a computer if the motherboard is just going to be outdated in a few years? Motherboards aren't cheap...

That's generally how technology works :P. Anyway with the current situation PC gaming is in most rigs last 5+ years unless you need high performance all the time. New hardware while in technical terms make your MB outdated it isn't going to make your hardware gaming wise, outdated. Unless of course another crysis situation happens 2 years from now.
Hypothetically speaking if you tried putting a core 2 quad in your MB you might still be ok for some gaming.
The motherboard itself wouldn't be terribly expensive to replace but some of the components may have to be replaced as well, like the RAM, it would be too slow to run on a newer MB. And the CPU obviously. So you might as well be replacing the whole thing at that point.
But its possible if you put a Core 2 Quad and a newer video card in there you could get another 2 years out of it with a decent gaming experience.

I made a small mistake buying my computer. I bought a 4870 with 512mb VRAM. I also bought a 1080p monitor a year later. On more recent games I have to lower the res so the game doesn't hitch.
I could just upgrade my card, but I want to upgrade my CPU as well(E8400.) I don't wanna bottleneck my GPU majorly...

Ah yeah that was bad! Anyway, AMD has been known to keep their sockets around for a while, if anything I'd resist the urge to upgrade (for BF3 prob? :D ) and see what they are offering (I believe bulldozer is supposed to launch this month?).
I'm actually thinking of trading my 1920x1080 monitor for my moms 1600x900...
I think it will be better for the set up I currently have.
The motherboard you linked was a s775 motherboard it wont be able to take any new CPU's it's a outdated but fully capable motherboard. Swap in a C2Q and your set for just about anything you can throw at it. It is fully compatible with most highend cards out today.I'm actually thinking of trading my 1920x1080 monitor for my moms 1600x900...

Get a C2Q and upgrade your GPU to pretty much anything your PSU can handle. You dont need to worry about bottlenecking unless youre trying to run a 6990 or something like that. IantheoneBuying a new Core 2 Quad would be stupid, they are basically so expensive that a faster AMD quad core and a matching motherboard sells for less, if you can find something cheap on the used market it might be an idea, but for now I'd say stick with the E8400 and get a new video card, but if a little overclock is possible, that would be great.

My mobo sucks at overclocking. Plus I have no idea what I am doing when it comes to overclocking.

What C2Q do you reccomend? I want to upgrade to something like a 6870.

The Q9650/9550/9450/9400/8400 or something like that but I would try to get a used one just to prolong the life of your rig without paying much for it. Noth worth it plowing down $200 for a new CPU just to keep it afloat a bit longer. What is your current CPU??
If you can find a decent core 2 quad for $150 or less then you can do that otherwise it just doesnt make any sense now. Q8400 is $180 on newegg which is just ridiculous.
What is your budget for upgrading? What GPU do you have?
Kindly give all the information and I'll give you the best solution to you. :)

Get a 6950 2GB if you plan to keep your 1080p monitor, dont skimp on GPU this time. 6870 is not meant for 1080p, 1GB 6950 is minimum if you cant afford the 2GB version.
Your E8400 even after overclocking would bottleneck it but you will still see a significant performance boost.
For a CPU upgrade I can only recommend you an i5 2500k setup, anything less is just not worth it from what you have. If it's too expensive for you then wait for the new AMD CPU's and see how it unfolds.

Gambler... Your saying HD4870 is to weak for playing 98% of every game with max ingame settings?
Because if you didn't I'm puzzled to your responce?
HD4870 plays crysis as well now as it did when it was released, same with metro, it plays it as well as it has been doing these years.
Ofc. it can't play the DX11 feutures but it sure is a great card that will run just about any game with the highest settings regardless of it being a 512mb card!
It's not like the games he already have been playing got worse suddenly because theres other cards with 4GB alivalable...
A HD4870 512mb or not plays games just fine, sure it's not the fastest card anymore, but a HD4870 512mb isn't that far off from the HD6870 he talked about.
Jango, swapping out the HD4870 BEFORE that dualcore is a mistake, the parts you have now is perfectly fine I'm sure you can play with the stuff a bit longer and when your unhappy with your performance exchange out the whole PC for a new build, you don't upgrade just because some guys on a gaming forum say so do you?
You upgrade when you can't play the games you like without lowering the settings to much, and in all honesty a HD4870 still breeze thru most games even @ 1080p.
A 4870 at 1080p is like GTS 250 at 16x10 so I know very well how good 4870 is at 1080p. If wants to play the likes of metro, crysis 2, witcher 2 and JC2 then yes it doesnt cut it for those games.
I barely scrapped high settings on metro but now I will wait to get a new card to play the other games.
And yes some of the new games at 1080p with AA are not gonna run well with 512MB VRAM regardless of what GPU it is, it can even be a GTX 580 but 512MB VRAM is just not enough. Are you suggesting that the TC is trolling when he says that he has to lower the res to 16x9 for some of his games? :?
And I never said anything about 98%.
And here comes the good ol techpowerup chart but did you just say 6870 to 4870 is not big enough a jump? Why do you I feel denial with that comment?
65% faster is not much difference ya right. I would agree the 1GB 4870 to still be a capable card for 1080p but not the 512MB.
How are you going to notice the framerate being 65% faster when your already playing in 55FPS with the HD4870? ...in reality you'll not able to tell the difference between 55fps and 60fps.A 4870 at 1080p is like GTS 250 at 16x10 so I know very well how good 4870 is at 1080p. Even more funny is that the chart you have don't matter to specify if it's the HD4870 1GB or 512mb? A guess that the memory makes no or so little difference in just about ANY game besides some uber settings in a game neither versions of the card can play satisfying regardless of the memoryamount that they didn't even bother to mention if it were a 1GB or a 512mb one.
The HD4870 512mb does in therms of Toms hardware beat out the 896mb gtx260 even in the resolutions ABOVE 1080p, so what say that about the memoryamount? Are you calling the gtx260 obsolete too?
We have been at this about video memory sevral times, the result is STILL the same, memory amount really isn't the judging factor of a card, in 49 of 50 cases the card has enough with vram to be relevant for the GPU it's fitted with for it's entire lifetime (usable life) , you cannot deny that you know and understand this because it's one of the most basic understandings of graphic hardware. The memory is STILL just a subfactor to the GPU's performance, and as already explained it really has very little to do with the funktion, 512mb is nowhere near obsolete, and more important is the fact that HD4870 were shiped with GDDR5 memory with high clocks and a 256bit memorybuss, the memory in reality is just as capable as the gtx460 768mb witch many can vote for being a pretty quick card!
I could bore anyone here to death with many of pages of charts where GPU's on different memory amount performing near identical, at the resolution of 1080p the HD4870 perform much alike regardless of the memory amount, I do not deny HD4870 1GB being a tiny bit better but in reality is so little that it cannot even be noticed before you fire up synthetic benchmarks in resolutions and settings you cannot get satisfying framerate on neither of the two.
The HD4870 is still a highly capable card, sure getting another better card will obvious make good to the framerate but using the without a doubth most popular 60hz screens the difference is quite tiny, the HD4870 512mb still plays the exsact same games fine, being able to use 8AA over 2AA perhaps seems like a good $300 investment for some people but to be that is a serious waste on the OP's economy.
Untill you cannot play games with good framerate and not being able to run games near the highest settings you should upgrade but heres the twist a HD4870 does STILL play most games max'ed out or near the highest setting pretty darn well.
Upgrading for the kicks of it is another thing, but then it's about the hardware and the fun in that, this is something I can relate to, it's afterall a really great hobby!, but if it's because of the gaming a 3Ghz dualcore along with a great card as the HD4870 512mb they do just fine in the most recent games granted not being able to utilize DX11 but apart from that they're not near obsolete and will hold for some time ahead.
The dualcore might be the biggest bottleneck, some games really start to strain C2D's, but often a CPU bottleneck scenario is scare tacktics, sure the CPU might limmit the performance if you own a HD6990 just as the CPU charts tells you, but being on a HD4870 the difference really isn't that obvious as the CPU still manage to ship quite much data for the graphic to handle, in the vast majority of games the GPU gets the biggest load and not near maxing out a modern 3Ghz dualcore.
@ Jango, from someone that recently upgraded from a HD4850 to a gtx460 (OC'ed up to ~ gtx470 performance @ 900core /2200mem) the REAL gain is mostly in the synthetic benchmarks, the HD4850 still plays most new games fine on a 1080p screen and thats why the difference isn't that big, yes a gtx470 should be much better and according to gamblers chart it's more than TWICE as fast but in reality the difference is minor as a HD4850 is still a pretty capable card, and the HD4870 witch is a fair bit faster I just cannot see that it would gain you as much that Gambler thinks.
People trying to justify their upgrading are lying to themself, I'm just being frank about it, the difference is really minor if it's a upgrade to keep up with technology and using the PC building as a hobby it's a whole other thing because that gives you pleashure in a way just to be able to run 8AA over 2AA even if the image quality really don't change as much you on the other hand have the knowlage of that 9700pro being much better over tha 9500xt.
I think you wont going to notice the difference that much playing games, but it's a good upgrade if you are actually interested in PC hardware and want something neat in your PC.
OMG can you not see the chart? It clearly says 4870 512M. And I did NOT say that it is more than twice as fast, it's 65% you really dont know maths do you? :?
And now let me show you what sort of a staggering difference VRAM can make.
The GTX 260 is more than twice faster let alone the 1GB 4870. Infact even stepping down the resolution it seems 512MB is a serious bottleneck with this game.
So having less VRAM isnt just a problem if you are on high resolution.
These are just two games, they dont bench the newer games on these cards anymore, I am pretty sure there are more games that bottleneck with 512MB VRAM.
Uggh, I made a bad decision getting this card. Ill upgrade my system slowly over the months.
-First ill buy a 6870 1 gig or 6950 2 gig and possibly overclock my CPU.
-Second Ill buy a new mobo and replace the ram with 8 gigs.
-Finally ill buy a new CPU which I haven't decided on yet.
 Are you even serious? Isn't it pretty obvious something malfunktion with/for the fools who made that chart? That test is the ONLY place where they've got these horrible numbers!OMG can you not see the chart? It clearly says 4870 512M. Farcry 2 @ tomshardware tells another story than your chart @ 1900*1200 with 4AA and 8AF and very high settings HD4870 512mb gets 40.4FPS where the 1GB vins with 45.5FPS, can't you see that your charts are sqreewed up?
Have a look those two farcry benchmarks then you head over to tomsH/GURU3D or anandtech and check for crossrefference because their card (or the testers) is OFC malfunktion! Have a look at the reviews there then you start talking about the "staggering difference" the total sum of benchmarks from Tomshardware in all the quality settings (1900*1200+ AA) the 512mb HD4870 gets 1338 and the 1GB version gets 1381, so 1338 vs. 1381THATS the staggering difference? :?
In my opinion and ALL other reviewers the two is performing nearly identical in just about any game if the card has trouble with drivers in a particular game that may be it but how much of a fool makes a chart on it and post it in his review when the result is obviously not even near correct?
I for one own a HD4850 512mb and it kicks their HD4870 512 by a enourmus margin in farcry 2 using the same settings, that is just silly!

I wouldn't really listen to gambler that much, his posts are overly dramatic.
Your cpu and your video card are paired nicely with each other.
Also, do not buy a motherboard without also buying a cpu too, if you get a motherboard that your cpu will fit into, it will not be a motherboard that you want, your socket is dead.
CPU/Motherboard/Ram all at once.
