my cousin came over and gave me a lecture that my Q6600 quad core is slow and i need to get the new intel I7.

well i still think my Q6600@ 3.0ghz still puts up a good fight. i have never had a problem with it and i don't see a need to upgrade.

so.. what do you think, is it worth upgrading or do i keep the Q6600?

Don't be so silly, give your cousin a BIG slap. Keep it if there are no problems, whats the point ? Do you use it for gaming ?

Don't forget that upgrading to the new i7 CPUs also included a memory (3 sticks required) and motherboard upgrade. But yes, the becnhmarks on Tom's Hardware and other sites show there are some improvements over an OCed Q6600, so if you have the cash to spend, go for it. I am waiting until next year for the total upgrade...

Q6600 still is worthy keeping. Heck, I've seen people building a new rig buy it. Don't send it off now, and wait for the i5 to arrive.

Even at stock speeds is fast enough. Overclock it and is one of the faster cpu's. Considering that is a quad core the q6600 has at least another 2-3 years ( maybe more) until it wont be able for gaming

Ok... the Q6600 is a great CPU, most programs don't even come close to utilizing quad core yet, stick with your q6600, its a great CPU and will plow through mostly everything, the i7 is faster but a gimmick, id try putting in a new video card, this will help alot if you don't have at least an 8 series GPU from nvidia

Exactly. Your cpu is good for a few years easily unless you're an upgrade junky. Yeah the new I7's are faster, you can't ever just keep up with every new and faster product.

Smack your cousin.

Your CPU will offer better performance when quad cores are supported across all games, not that it needs it. I was looking at buying one :P. Tell your cousin to look at this thread :P

DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON A CORE I7. You will have to upgrade your motherboard and get DDR3 memory. The Core i7 CPUs are far too expensive at the moment and your Q6600 will more then adequate for AT LEAST another year. Im doing what someone else mentioned and im going to wait untill properbly next year or year after and then upgrade to a Core i7.

the corei7 isn't that much better and is no way worth the price. core 2 - i7 is nothing compared to the huge jump from pentium d to core 2

No offense but tell your cousin he is a noobish moron lol.

I had the Q6600 before I bought my current CPU and it was perfectly fine... a great CPU even. It's still in my brother's PC and is working wonders, the thing is quite beasty and I would recommend it to anybody.

I'm just a slut for all things new and fast so I'll be upgrading again in the next month or so, but it is by no means necessary and I'll admit it's definitely overkill to do so - so don't do it!

:)
