Always been curious about this, I've only played world of warcraft on a computer but if you were to play like COD on a computer, is it free to play online like PSN? JW

yes, if the game has no monthly fees, the online multiplayer is free after purchase.

Yes, unless you're playing a subscription based MMO Game like WOW, those still obviously cost money. But to play games like Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3, we do not have any monthly fee's. You simply buy the game, install it and you can play single player and online without any further payments being necessary. We don't pay for things like Xbox live on PC.

Yeah, the general rule of thumb is all online gaming is free except for MMOs (free MMOs do exists though.)

As far as I know only some MMO games are pay to play although more and more are going to a Free2Play model. Everything else is free, no fees like XBox live.

No online fee, like xboxlive. PSN is free, PC online gaming free, Nintendos online will be free with the WiiU.. Wonder what Xbox offers that is sooo much better that warrants a price, much less $60 a year, oh thats right... nothing.

Yes and No. It's free for most, but for those actually running the servers no it isn't.

I think he means in a bigger picture (at least I hope so). As in, consoles shouldn't be charging for the online experience.

How is it irrelevant? It's the actual answer. As a whole online PC gaming is hardly free. Just free for most. In fact for those running the servers it's pretty damn expensive.

99.9% of those playing games have no contact with server maintenance, it's irrelevant, extremely, how or in what way a server functions isn't up to you and you shouldn't care, unless you're actually "buying" a server for a game you want.

So it appears to be A RaseshX.

It takes alot more than .1% of the community to get enough servers up and running for all the games being played.

It doesn't, more than half of the severs available for top FPSs that have dedicated servers are empty, and 2-3K servers with some players towards full are a small number compared to the millions that play every week (games like BF 3, CS 1.6, Source, etc). Hosting servers isn't part of playing a game, it's not up to you or anyone else, people that choose to will do so, TC never asked about this.

Yes he did. He asked: "Is online gaming free for PC users?". The only answer I could possibly give is the one above. Free for most, but not for all.

You're saying that servers cost money, he never asked about servers, or maybe I missed something? People don't buy servers because they're required to play the games, they buy them because they choose to, no matter how much you try, what you said is irrelevant, no "normal" user is going to pay for companies to host servers.

He asked about playing PC games online. Pretty hard to do without a server to connect to. A ton of normal users do all the time. Why do you think they have sites like http://www.gameservers.com? All I'm saying is that in order for PC gaming to be free for most, a small group of PC gamers has to be willing to host servers for them to play on.

Majority of normal users don't but would most likely run the servers themselves from there own server machine. Also you're talking about something that's completely optional. Herpy derp derp...

The majority of games are peer to peer or hosted on official servers.

Custom servers are mostly only used in some shooters and even in those, there is usually a bunch of official servers to play on. It's hardly a necessity to online gaming in general.

Pretty much always has been free. Only specific games that need to make a lot of money to keep running have fees. Like WoW which has something like 450+ servers to keep running along with all their customer support in-game, telephone and web.

Bingo. Xbox live is the only one that ever has. And, based on my experience with it, and the experience of everyone I know who owns Xboxes, it's never been worth it.

Well generally private servers are run off of donations, you never really have to pay, but you can if you want to. Official servers are almost always free, the exception is basically mmos.

I have been a donator for a TF2 server group before. Other than that I only pay for the interwebs.

Sad that things like xblive screw the customers with a "paid" service that should be free.
