I dont think I've seen an MMORPG so unashamedly similar to WoW as of yet.

You haven't played LOTRO I take it? quite funny really; a game that rips off the game which ripped off loads of its lore :?.
Funny? you haven't played Warhammer then, it literally, uses WoW content with darker colors to make them grittier. You haven't played LOTRO I take it? quite funny really; a game that rips off the game which ripped off loads of its lore :?.

Also, there is no copyright for the fantasy world, you'll notice, if you read books, how most of the fantasy genre never changes. Tolkien did not invent fantasy he adapted what was already present.
Right..because World of Warcraft was so original? MMORPGs existed before WoW. Every single concept in the game had been done before.. but the reason World of Warcraft was so successful is because Blizzard was really good at figuring out which elements worked from previous games, and which ones didn't. There wasn't much innovation going on at Blizzard.. it was all about refinement.
Rift is doing pretty much the same thing. The developers are making note of what works, and implementing/refining it. Also, the PvE (main part of the game) has more in common with Warhammer Online than anything else.. though even then that comparison doesn't quite cut it. It has its own unique little flavor.
It seems some people want every new MMO to reinvent the genre or something.
>It seems some people want every new MMO to reinvent the genre or something.Velocitas8True, if it's fun and a solid game AKA of quality and the company supports it constantly with updates and fixes and the staff doesn't make impossible promises, it's worth playing and it'll have an extremely large community, a community that will only rise, not disappear or go extremely low after just an year like all games that want to be "WoW killers".
The sooner the developers start to care more about their actual game and they forget about the nice dream they had last night about how they can make something that was never done before in a MMO and they promise that certain something to the community, something that they don't even know what it is and they take their eyes of WoW, the better, then they'll actually make a game that's worth it for a long time, not just for a few months for exploration sake.
MMO developers focus too much on WoW that's the main problem of the MMO world and that's why they don't last or they just can't raise their player base (you never hear ArenaNet complaining and they certainly don't really pay attention to WoW, yet they're doing just fine, even if their first game wasn't exactly a true MMO, 2nd will be and it looks promising even if I'm not a fan of their PvP way, I'll be getting and probably I'll enjoy exploring the world)..
Have you even played Rift or are you just a WoW fanboy who can't stand the thought of it being dethroned? Newflash: EVERY mmo since WoW has copied the hell out of it because it was a successful model. Saying that, after playing Rift I am thoroughly convinced that outside of the interface similarities it does more to separate itself from WoW than it does otherwise.I dont think I've seen an MMORPG so unashamedly similar to WoW as of yet.

I just dont see why its acceptable in the MMORPG genre to blatantly rip something off like this just because its successful (Imagine if this happened in any other genre over and over)? Would say is rift a clone of everquest live ripp off..Just like wow is a clone of everquest live ripp off nuff said..Wow did get its foundation from eq lets not forget this..

I'd sure like that, sick of wow clones. lol@everyone nerd raging over WoW being referenced as what's being copied, no surprise, it's the king atm and the games really do feel similar and people are just going to relate it to what they know best.
DMC with a realistic twist to the melee combat (with added depth) = nosebleed if it were in an mmo. And I personally hate gear's stats, the whole gear > skill issue... It's fine in pve, but it's damn annoying in pvp, especially when you upgrade it can mess with balance.
I've played tons of MMORPGs and many of them draw similarities. But when Ultima Online, Asheron's Call, and Everquest were the big 3 they were distinctively different! Even after Anarchy Online and Dark Ages of Camelot came on the scene they too were able to set themselves apart. EVE Online wasn't a immediate success but it was DIFFERENT. City of Heroes came out and that too was refreshing! Dare I say it; even World of Warcraft was an eye opener for me! You even had Vanguard that try to get back to MMO roots even though it utterly failed.
But there are definitely a handful of games that really pay tribute to World of Warcraft and draw ALOT of similarities to that "one" game. Yes, they follow some tradition and protocol that makes an MMORPG. Rift is one of those games but just like Lord of the Rings Online they have a few things that do set it apart some what(I love the cIass system). But it's very obvious that Rift was heavily influenced by WoW.
At least Rift is trying to be a bit different with its class system. And you act like WoW is the first MMO to ever exist. It's a ripoff of EQ, Ascheron's Calls and Dark Age of Camelot.deadesaI don't think that's a very solid argument. Whether or not WoW took a lot from those games, it doesn't play much like them. EQ is still a very unique experience, as is AC. Rift plays so similarly to WoW, if you know how to navigate WoW's UI you already know Rift's. The soul system is nice, I agree.

WoW ripoff? It's more like a Warhammer rip off. WoW is essentially a rip off of EQ and DaoC so I guess you could say Rift is king of the EQ DaoC WoW Warhammer ripoffs.
Oh and i'm not raging against WoW either. Ive been playing it since day 1 launch, have a grand marshal and I lead raids in cata. So yes i'm still a very active WoW player.

I've played World of Warcraft since vanilla and I don't see any similarities.

Hey u quise every turn-based RPG is a rip-off of Final Fantasy! Teh lulz!
Seriously, though, come on. I've played both and I feel more Guild Wars in it than WoW. MMOs WILL have tons of similarities. Like UI; You can't really change it anymore. The UI has been optimized for playability and every MMO player is going to be familiar with it. Genre; if it's not a Sci-Fi MMO, it's a ripoff of WoW? Lol, okay.
You get my point. It's taking what is good from older MMOs and advancing upon that.
This topic fails hard, obviously a bunch of haters who have no set foot in Rift.
All mmo's copy the standard from one game or another so that is really a non-issue. Rift has more original elements to it than any game I can think of recently.
I dare anyone to tell me where the class/soul system was ripped off from.
As for public quest ripoffs, ummmm no. Rift actually took it a step further, anyone who has not flagged themselves as "private" can be clicked and joined to automatically create a public party ANYWHERE. Have to kill 10 whatevers for a quest but it is packed with people trying to kill the same thing? Simply right click on someone and create a public questing group so everyone can get credit.
In beta I played the starter area of the game and it was the same as every other mmo, I reluctantly kept going and gave it a chance. If I only played that starter area I would have agreed with you all. I have to think this is what you people did.
If you play the game you would see you are wrong, the only mmo it reminds me of while playing is Tabula Risa.

This indeed did happen :P. Tired of "WoW Clones" , where are the high production value Ultima Online clones? would be so much better...Two things I noticed as soon as I started playing Rift:
The amount of similarities with WoW
The amount of players in the chat talking about the similarities with WoW.
-Unreal-
Rip off or not it took the exact same road as WoW. WoW took elements from other games, improved on them a bit and put them together to make a great game. Same goes for Rift, take ideas from other games, improve on them, put them together and release a great game. WAR did it similarly but whereas the WAR devs are, were and always will be crap, Trion seems to work hard on improving their game.
[QUOTE="vfibsux"]
Judging by the amount of WoW fanboys threatened by this game I think it is already a success.

Even the goldsellers see the success in this game, they already staterted to send tells...
Yea and Trion made it very easy to report them, thankfully. Hopefully they will be vigilant in banning their accounts. You really can't be serious. I know a lot of long-time WoW players and fans of WoW will have played Rift and some will maybe even buy the game, but to think that any fans of WoW will think that Rift would take millions of players away from WoW is rediculous.Judging by the amount of WoW fanboys threatened by this game I think it is already a success.

Well, they managed to hook up my entire guild, (around 30 people) that's a start. Pretty sure we're not the only ones either. Seems they had a massive success so far.
On topic: I'm afraid people saying its a WoW ripoff haven't played it lol...
It took a lot of concepts (the good ones) from a lot of mmos on the market and there is nothing wrong with it since it does it extremely well. I see a lot of WoW and Warhammer influence but some of the major features of the game are unique to it. The rifts being the most obvious one and the class system being the next. When was the last time in WoW you actually saw players ganging together (100 people or more) and did something? That's what the rifts events are.
WoW gave me years of enjoyment, and despite my break from it, I am sure I will get back to it again.
Rift is also a great game
So, instead of being a spiteful little **** and go "Wah wah wah", I am going to enjoy one those two good games while you guys waste your time arguing over something fundamentally wasteful as an MMO :P Its wasteful^2 what you are doing

Facts about the Rift class system:
1. 4 "callings" (classes) -Warrior, Cleric, Mage, Rogue
2. Each calling has 9 "souls" which could be seen as sub-classes or even skill trees.
3. Each player can have 3 active souls at once, as stated these are basically interchangeable skill trees.
4. At level 13 simple quests can be done to activate all 9 souls in your class category.
5. You can respec cheap and switch out these souls at any time to try new ones.
6. You can purchase a 2nd "role" at any time so you can easily switch out between two, yes like WoW but...........
..............saying that, due to the vast amount of options involved not at all like WoW.
Example:
Cleric
The Cleric has options of ranged heal, melee heal, tank(complete with taunts and all), melee dps, or ranged dps.And remember you can spec into three of any of these at the same time in the same spec. Think of them as skill trees that are able to be chosen from and switched out with simple respecs.
The class system is one of the few things in Rifts that sets it apart from WoW. It simply took ideas from what has been done before with the class systems and skill trees in other games and revamped it to what it is here. Great job and not worthy at all of being called a copy.
Agree, I'm having lots of fun with this game. And honestly being able to both be a tank or an offensive warrior whenever I feel like it is amazing. The soul system and rifts are pure win.Who cares? Rift feels like something new, wow is old and boring now...
Sure same old MMO-style quest: Kill X mobs, collect X items ... but its fun :P
