I don't mind companies protecting their products from theft but I do mind them installing or making us install invasive DRM unto our computers just so we can play a game.

I have had so much trouble on my system from SecuRom it's unbelievable. People ask how I know it was the DRM that messed up my pc... because I started having trouble only after I installed the game that had invasive DRM on it.

I DO NOT buy games that have invasive DRM or support companies that use it.

Both disc-check and online versions of SecuROM are pretty bad, though tolerable to me. Three things in particular that bothers me about SecuROM: 1. It significantly slows the game's start-up. C&C3, for example, took over half a minute to start from the moment I click on the icon. I also notice that games with SecuROM suffer minor but noticeable performance penalty. 2. It doesn't self-terminate after exiting the game, taking up CPU resources and memory. 3. Which brings me to my third gripe: it interferes with my CD/DVD writing software while it is active. This means I have to restart my computer to kill the process. I guess you can't expect much when SecuROM's developer, Sony, was also the chief perpetrator of XCP - an even more atrocious DRM solution (though thankfully not for PC games) than SecuROM. I also rate SecuROM much more tolerable than the early versions of Starforce (once used primarily by Deep Silver and Ubisoft), which was just pure evil.

Yeah, pretty much. I own plenty of games with both versions of SecuROM. All I did was I researched like crazy and so I knew exactly what I was getting myself into. As I said, it's bad but tolerable.

Yeah, Securom destroyed my CD/DVD drive back in the day. Never got it fixed. I still haven't forgiven it. In short, yes it is that bad.
