Minus select games made by various developers(Blizzard and EA included), yes. But the games get added months after their retail releases. You can usually find the big names on Steam within a month of their release on other services.

In many ways yes, but it's not the only service of it's kind. There is also Direct Downloader, Impulse, and a couple other major services. While I do like Steam very much, for the next to PC games I plan on getting, Section 8 and Modern Warfare 2, I'm getting the retail boxed versions.

Not necessarily, none of my real-life PC gamer friends use Steam. I don't either, except for Left 4 Dead because it forces me to.

I have steam but I hardly ever use it. I prefer having a box and manual. I only have steam for the occasional re-release of something not found in stores or a game you cant buy in stores. Examples - The Monkey Island remake by Lucasarts, The Dig and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. Im still hoping they re-release Full Throttle and Day of the Tentacle for Vista like they did the last 2 games i just mentioned.

About half the PC gamers i know in RL use steam. What i have noticed is that the half that don't have it don't tend to play online as much and don't tend to play FPS on PC, they're more into strategy and tycoon games.

I use Steam when I need to... to play Valve games or get super-discounted games or compilations not available elsewhere. I find the prices on Steam abit ridiculous for the most part...Im not going to pay the same price or more for a digital subscription.

Much prefer a physical copy of games.

I've only got two games that require Steam. I buy most of my games from Newegg...

The only reason I use Steam is to play Left 4 Dead, Steam basically is a rip-off from Microsoft's Games for Windows Live. They totally ripped Live's achievement system. True Steam may have more features like talking to friends out of game and you can buy online but Steam is much more of a resource hog than GFWLand you have to be online to activate your games on Steam. I think once Live 4.0 is released their will be a few changes to the PC gaming world and hopefully it will be for the better. I'm sick of Steam users cussing GFWL service too and I'm ready for the hate mail to roll in from the fanboys!

GFWL isn't that bad, but the difference is that Steam has Valve backing it up, games like CS and TF2 are what keep people using it and Valve actively supports it. Microsoft on the other hand just sorta threw it out there, to them it's just an extention of other Live services and it doesn't get much attention from them.

I agree, but they don't even try. The library of games is simply pathetic, and if MS themselves aren't putting out games for it why would anyone else? If they showed some support for it, even something like Halo3+Gears2+Fable2 at Win7 release, companies like EA or Activision might actually start to give a damn. Games like BF and CoD is what it needs, otherwise it won't be more than a useless distraction for most PC gamers.

I know personally that all of my friends who play PC Games use Steam. Not only for Valve games but many others due to the ease of use and the selection of games. Don't get me wrong, I love having a boxed copy of the game but due to the ISP that we all use not having a bandwidth cap and the fact that Futureshop/Staples/EBGames all have very poor PC Game selections anymore it only makes sense to jump over to digital distribution for us.
