Hey, I am trying to get my mam to let me use her card to get some games(HL2 Holiday Pack) off Steam, the problem is we have had details stolen from previous cards and she has had to get new ones. So I was wondering how secure steam was, my machine is brand new and has anti virus and firewall software working well so my machine isnt a problem anymore, but I she wants some reasurance that Steam is safe and her card wont be jacked through it, so from your experience is Steam a good and safe way to purchase games? Thanks.

Im sure we can fill up 100 pages and argue wether or not steam is safe or not, but when all is taken into consideration, steam is a reputable company and perfectly ok to purchase from. 3 words was more then enough regarding this question.

I bought HL2 silver package in fall of 2004 on steam and do date, nothing bad happened to the credit card (not mine, my dad's but hasn't had any complaints yet).

Its as secure (if not more so) than any other website you buy stuff from, such as amazon, newegg, etc.

Can you get your stuff stolen?  Yes, but it is extremely unlikely and you can hold Steam liable for bad security.

Steam uses SSL-128 bit encryption, it's very secure. possibilities = 2^128

You should probably check your computer for keylogger and spyware before entering credit number just to be sure. They are the real problem

I have the exact same problem. My mom won't let me use her card and pay her back cause she thinks that anything without a little lock icon in the corner is insecure. I actually found this thread by Googling things to try and convince her otherwise. I'm almost absolutely certain STEAM is secure, cause I've used Gift Cards before...But I need something where I can adjust the amount; like I use her card then I pay her back. ...She still won't let me. >:(

Had steam for 4-5 years and not one issue with credit card :)

Enjoy your new games ;)

Steam is more secure then using your credit card to pay for a delivery of pizza (I have had my credit card info lost because of this, but never steam).

Bought over 60 games with steam using various credit cards and debit cards and never had a problem. If anything gets stolen more likely your computer is infected with a virus or key-logger so not an issue with steam lacking security.

have you tried buying through the steam games website instead of through the steam client? This way you get the little lock icon showing its encrypted see if that convinces your mom to let you use her card.
