In that case, I'll restart my computer and see if that helps.

make sure you dont have any Peer Guardian type programs on. Thats the only time my steam was acting up was when I had that runnign by mistake in teh background.
What's Peer Guardian?

I restarted my computer, but the problem still persists. I have no idea what could be causing this.

What programs are you running atm?
Rock Star Games Social Club and Google Chrome.
I'm having the same issue at the moment. My best guess is that they may have taken a server or two down for maintenance. I'll just do what it says and "try again later"

Well, it sucks because it prevents me from playing any of the games I've bought through Steam. Right now, I want to play BF: BC 2.

Hope you get it working quick.
Try leaving steam every 10mins maybe.
FIXED: I googled and found the following which has fixed it for me!!!: "I suggest deleting your clientRegistry.blob file in the Steam folder, then restart steam" good luckhassiba
I was jsut gonna search google for that one haha, that worked for my friends few months ago.

Thanks. Your advice worked for me. After I deleted that file, Steam updated itself and now it's working.
I'm getting this too, seems to pop up right away like it doesn't even try to connect. Everything was fine last night, just got back from work, my computer shut itself off and when I tried to get onto steam I get that same error.
EDIT - never saw those last two messages, that worked like a charm for me, thanks guys! Kinda funny cuz I do tech support for routers :/
