Just finished Witcher 1 this afternoon and it was a really good game. I can see why people on this forum always spoke highly of it. At this point I am considering going for the sequel right away but had some questions for how they improved the gameplay or if it is the same.

Specifically, I thought the traveling was extremely tedious in Witcher 1. My left hand got so damn sore from constantly holding down the W key during several hour play sessions. Have the improved this? Also, the combat system was OK in Witcher 1, but i didnt think it was very interesting. How is the combat different or is it the same? I guess another very minor concern is the whole loot issue. I found that 90% of the loot I picked up in the game was completely useless and ended up being a big waste of time.

you can cheat on triss without her knowing, kinda a spoiler but i hope u dont mind. most of the stuff you pick up you can use for making potions and the combats kinda fun too of course people do complain they want to hit whatever target they can instead of closest to them but i didnt mind. you'll probably find a few gripes about the game but the stories so good it sucks u in. im sure youve seen gameplay videos it pretty much tells you all your going to need to know

Witcher 2 points :

1-no more tedious backtracking and pointless walking around. Fun to explore the environs

2-Much much much better loot. You can find weapons (that actually work now), armor, daggers, diagrams to craft weapons e.t.c

3-combat is much better, but it requires some practice to get the hang of it. YOU MUST USE EVERY ITEM/POWERS AT YOUR DISPOSAL TO WIN FIGHTS

4-meaningful side quests

5-DAT GRAPHICS!

6-DAT TRISS

7-WIN

Combat feels more like an action rpg, rather than click and canned animation systems. So you do more dodging and have to really be careful about being attacked from behind (there is no click to win group stance) I didn't really find myself sick of the travel in the first game but I don't think witcher 2 has much of it, areas aren't that huge. There is a still a lot of useless loot in the game, you get an insane amount of items from downed enemies. At one point I had like 100 nekker teeth. You can use them to make bombs though. Weapons and armor are more useful this time with fairly even upgrades to both.

Cheers guys. I think i will pick this up soon.

Most of the travel in Witcher 1 was OK, but i really got sick of it in Chapter 4 in particular because there was about 4-5 zones (with some sub-zones) and no way to get anywhere in them except on foot. One thing i really did like though was it always felt like there was about 4-5 things i needed to do, which kept me playing for hours on end. I found myself really enjoying the dialogue a lot in the game too and that kept it interesting. All told I played about 50 hours in less than one week.....pretty addicting game.

There's endless walking around and tedious backtracking because the quests are often very vague and objectives are obscure. Destroy the nekker nests and then you have to find them all yourself...in a forest. All the navigation tools aren't very helpful either. As mentioned the combat is more like a real time third person action game. This might have been addressed but when I played the game the combat was broken because of the unbalanced difficulty settings.

navigation would have been alot easier if there was a NORTH arrow on the compass...

It's a piece of trash IMO. I can sort of understand why the combat is bollocks, but there are two decisions which truly baffle me:

- the map using the glagolitic alphabet. WTF

- the potion system makes no sense. You can't drink potions in combat anymore, you're supposed to use them before. But you don't know when and if you need them! I think they're trying to mimic the first game's opening cutscene, but there's a big difference: in that cutscene and in the books, Geralt knew what monsters he would face. In The Witcher 2, it's all about guessing. It's not choice and it's not planning, it's simply guessing.

I stopped playing two hours in, I'm too old for this ****.
