Hey, I've been playing on some Panasonic 32" T.V standard def(480i) T.V forever now with my PS3.

I have about $300 saved and expect about $300 from Christmas. With a bit more from my parents, I'm looking at buying a decent $700ish T.V,32-40 inch T.V.

My question is, is it really worth it to spend all of my current savings(I'm only 15) on a T.V? Is it worth it? The T.V would be primarily used for gaming. Btw, LCD or Plasma, 720p or 1080p?

I don't plan on purchasing anything else anytime soon.

Hey, I've been playing on some Panasonic 32" T.V standard def(480i) T.V forever now with my PS3.

I have about $200 saved and expect about $300 from Christmas. With a bit more from my parents, I'm looking at buying a decent $700ish T.V,32-40 inch T.V.

I don't see a new post either. Maybe someone posted then deleted it. It depends. If you aren't going to spend the money on anything else, then go for it. An HDTV is a great investment, personally when I go back to playing on non-HD it just isn't the same. With a PS3 you also get Blu-Ray, buy some Planet Earth, rent your favorite movies, and you're set. Go for the full 1080p, some may say its not worth it, but I having been playing in 1080p for a few months now, there is definitely a difference. And as for Plasma or LCD, I don't really think it makes a difference. I have heard Plasma's have the burn-in problems fixed, and produce more vibrant colours, but don't work as well in rooms with natural light (I have an LCD, it is great). I couldn't tell you much more than that though. So, in short, go for it. Maybe even try the horrible, horrible crowds of Boxing Day to see if you can swing a bit of a better deal, as you don't seem to have too much money in the stockpiles there.

I've played many many demos and games for 360 on both standard and HD, so here is what I can say for the matter: + HD games and videos will obviously be more detailed, and be more immersive + HD benefits go only as far as they can for visual enhancement - Core game play or content will not be enhanced +- Lighting appears to be more radiant in HD Bottom line is, if you're a visual person, or care to be visually immersed in the game, then make the jump to HD. If not, then a normal TV will still provide the same entertainment, albeit not as visually engaging. Do take note, text in next-gen SD gaming is hard to read.

If you're financially ready to make that purchase I believe it's worth it.

Hmm, natural light isn't really a problem, I do have a couple of of windows, but they aren't very large and a simple sheet will cover them. Plasma is what I was leaning towards, and I understand that the core-gameplay will remain the same.

Yeah, I'm not old enough to work, and I don't have any real source of income, seeing as I'm 15 so I don't have much financial freedom with this decision. As of right now I'm leaning towards a Plasma 32" on Boxing Day. However my dad doesn't like to buy low-quality things so there are two things that could happen. One, he doesn't let me buy the T.V, or two, he puts a couple hundred more in and I get a decent T.V for my needs.($900ish)

Will the difference force me to play through all of my old games again to see the visual difference?

Also, I don't plan on buying anything else major. If I did keep the money, it would just be for things like restaurants and such.

Thanks for the posts by the way.

No, you probably won't be feeling the need to play through ALL your old games again. I however, when I did get my HDTV, tried them all out, just to see the difference. It is great the first time you boot up CoD 4, GeoW or MGS 4 and see just how incredible HD makes them look.

Nice :P.

Now, imagine Killzone 2 + Uncharted:Among Thieves o.0.

I've pretty much decided to get one right now. I mean, I have nothing else to spend my money on and have been wanting a new T.V for quite a while now.

I've heard that on T.V's under 40", 720p and 1080p are nearly identical. Is this true?

Pretty much. I would say sizes 42' and above are the best for seeing major differences between 720p and 1080p.

Well, I'm currently looking at low-mid 30's, so 1080p is a waste of money? Will Blu-ray movies look different? Games?

Oh, and I REALLY don't want lag. I mean, when I push a button, I want the T.V to respond instantly. Just like the old tube T.V's.

Are Plasmas good at that?

It's extremely worth it if you play a lot of games that require seeing details in the distance, especially on first-person shooters.

What may be a blob of a pixel at 480p will be a visible bad guy running your direction in 720p.

Yeah I do play alot of FPS (Cod4, Cod5, Killzone 2,etc.) so I could see how seeing someone could be useful :P.

P.S - I'm not even playing on 480p, I'm playing on 480i :P.

Get it! You'll love the upgrade! I hadn't realised what a massive difference it was after playing on 42" HD Plasma until i went around to a mate's place and saw his house mates playing Geow2 and F3 on their SD tv, it was a all fuzzy and blurry, and the colours were washed out, text difficult to read in game, when trying to play on it i felt like i was squinting to see what was going on half the time. It's a major upgrade, and definitely worth it if you have the cash to afford it.

I have to say, playing 360 on a 480i 4:3 ratio TV after playing it on a 1080p widescreen is awful. Once you go HD you never want to go back. Older games don't hold up well though. Not so much the 2D games, but Playstation, N64, Saturn, Dreamcast Gamecube, PS2, and Xbox. The 3D stuff. It's very evident that they were not built for HD. Not at a point of unplayability, but you still go "Ah! What the hell happened to Majora's Mask!?! Teh jaggies!". I got over it though. Some games hold up better than others.

My parents went halvesies with me on a nice TV for my room for my birthday. And just recently we bought a new living room TV out of fear of the impending death of our old one. Pretty awesome. :D

Ya do it. I spend 547$ on a brand new 32 LCD Vizio (720p) I can't play on any thing else. I would do it. Plus I think the TV is now like 520$ or something. And buy LCD.

Yes, go with 1080p , not sure about Plasma or LCD. Take your PS3 to the store and test which is better.

I've always had a better time with LCD. I play my PS3 on a Plasma once and it looks kind of bad.

Anything smaller than a 50" .....1080P is just a waste of money.....It is well known (smaller than 50") that the difference is so small you will not notice a difference...

If you can find a quality 720P set and save some money...I would suggest that...

Yeah, that's kinda what I was thinking. I've also heard contrast and viewing angle are much more important than resolution.

I think I'll do what you said and go for a quality 720p T.V.

Sony Bravia any good?

I've seen em for $599...Boxing day they could be down to $499? I think I'll go for one of those. Any problems with them for gaming?

I was in a fairly similar situation to you, I'd say definetely get one if you have the spare money. I have a 32 inch HD LCD and I love it (pretty big leap from my 13 inch tube), I have a fair amount of natural lighting in my room and I prefer my TV to not take too much power, that's why I chose an LCD, but if natural lighting isn't an issue and you don't care about the extra power costs then plasma might be the way to go. The difference between 720p ans 1080p is not really noticeable on televisions below 42 inches, in my opinion at least.

Also from what I have heard Sony Bravias are good and they're fine for gaming.

I would say go for it. I was in a similar situation to yours earlier, but when I was about 2/3 done with saving up for a new HDTV (my first one as well), I finally convinced my parents to get me one, so now I have lots of extra money on my hands (which I'll unfortunately have to spend on gifts for my family :(). But yeah it really is worth it; what further makes my previous situation similar to yours is that I was also playing on a 32" 480i SDTV before getting my first HDTV, and when I got the HDTV, I found that the difference was pretty significant. The difference, of course, does also depend on what kind/quality of TV you get, because 480i on an EDTV (enhanced definition TV, which is what you have I'm guessing) is not that much worse than, say, 720p on an HDTV. But all in all, it's definitely worth it. The only gripe I have with HDTVs is that most of their audio speakers suck, so unless you get a good quality one (which I'm sure you can with $600+), you'll want to use external speakers/a sound system with you HDTV. Otherwise, investing in an HDTV is very much worth it.

You should make the jump. Anyone who says that HD is not worth it is an idiot. Even my 60 year old mother can appreciate watching the glory of bluray movies on my 50 inch panny. Don't get a bargain brand either. Get a samsung or sony if LCD or panny or samsung if you go plasma. You can easily get a good TV for 700. I don't think you need 1080 p either.

I don't plan on purchasing anything else anytime soon.

urdead18

should be worth it. the improvements in graphics when using a hdtv is quite noticeable. get an lcd tv, one with a wide viewing angle, plasma is not very reliable due to ghosting. 720p should be enough for a 32-inch, 1080p if your getting a 40-inch hdtv. make sure you buy a tv with a free hdmi cable as well. display output with a component cable on a hdtv looks horible.

I don't plan on purchasing anything else anytime soon.

should be worth it. the improvements in graphics when using a hdtv is quite noticeable. get an lcd tv, one with a wide viewing angle, plasma is not very reliable due to ghosting. 720p should be enough for a 32-inch, 1080p if your getting a 40-inch hdtv. make sure you buy a tv with a free hdmi cable as well. display output with a component cable on a hdtv looks horible.

just to let you know you dont get ghosting on a plasma thats LCD's you may get phosphor trails on a plasma but that is usually because the contrast is set too high.

**** i think i got the term wrong. it's not ghosting, it's burn-in. ghosting is for lcd tv with slow response time.

composite cables look horrible not component. component looks awesome hdmi looks better but you still get an hd image with component but stay away from composite or s-video on a hdtv its horrendous!!! but anyway get a hdtv you wont regret it youll wonder how you ever lived without it and do keep an sdtv around because if you ever wanna play ps2 or older system games they look better on a sdtv

it depends on the tv. on a hd ready tv component cable is fine. but on a full hd tv it does look horible.
