So, I'm looking for a new series to play from start to finish. I'm thinking about either the Max Payne series or the Assassin's Creed series. Is the original Max Payne worth playing? I'm fine with older games, as long as the gameplay is good.

You couldn't have picked a better series. The trilogy is one continuous good story with a decent chunk of witty humor to boot. The first one holds up well, the graphics look good and crisp at 1080p, the gameplay is excellently responsive and fast, the enemies and environments are a bit repetitive, though the great story makes up for that.
Play one and two and forget the third is my advice :Pnutcrackr
the thrid one is certainly not in the same league as the first two...but it's still one of my favorite games this year.
playing @ old school difficulty is simply awesome, and it's not like we have any unique and inspiring pure tp shooters around these days~

yes.
killed her once for the sake of beating all the bosses in the game...felt bad and never do that again:)
Play one and two and forget the third is my advice :PnutcrackrHeck no, I'd say skip the first one and dive right into two and three.

I do it every time :P
both are great 2 is one of my favorite gamesachilles614
certainly my favorite of the three; the levels involving both Max and Mona are highlights of the series for me.
The original is a great game, was really fun for its time and even quite a few years later when I replayed it, it was still awesome.
The second one was pretty well done although I didn't like it as much as the first.
I'd specifically recommend Max Payne 2(not 1 unless you really care for the story) because it has some of the best level design I've ever seen in a video game, especially for its time. Although if you like messing around MP2 doesn't have the same level of mod support as MP1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIhjtSY-nxgZubinen
Lol that brings back memories.
Oh yes, definitely get the Max Payne series. After the first two the third might sound like a bit of an odd bird, but it's everything but. It's easily one of the best series of shooters ever made, up there with Half-Life, Star Trek Elite Force and No One Lives Forever.
seriously? I think they both hold up very well. MP1 mainly because the story and writing are so good. The 2nd one I think still looks great graphically.Loved the first two but playing through them now is so painful, though so was Max Payne 3 so...

I really liked the third one as well. Even when the story got a little funky.Oh yes, definitely get the Max Payne series. First two were great and I only recently played them. Couldn't stop playing them.
The third was ok. I got bored of the third one when I got to the slums and haven't touch it since. I don't think it's good enough to get me to pick it up again.

Funny enough I'd skip 2 and just play 1 and 3.
They're all enjoyable games, but 2 is just so over the top and full of itself that the story feels like a chore, where in 1 and 3 it feel very legitimately dark and I can care for Max.
I'd say the series as a whole is amazing. People have varying opinions on the qualities of each game, but they are all worth playing, and as a long time fan of the series I think 3 was my absolute favorite with the treatment Max got and the bevy of easter eggs and callbacks to his history that ensured even 9 years later and under a different company, this IS Max Payne.
The first one is a tad dated gameplay wise but the story is great, the second definitely makes the gameplay more enjoyable with improved pacing, better AI and much cooler combat and physics, but man the story is so cheesy, and the third hits the mark in both spots (but it does have a couple of minor niggling issues that didn't detract from the experience). I'd say the series is easily the best story focused third person shooter series out there today, stellar writing and stellar gameplay across each title.
Assassin's Creed is also a good series, but super hit and I really only loved Assassin's Creed II.
[QUOTE="l-lord"]You do realize MP1 and 2 were released many years before MP3, right? Captain Obvious over here. :P Yes. Thats why it deserves to be considered the best one. The story isn't ruined. It is the same old Max just in a rehab. Max Payne is famous for bulletime shooting which Max Payne 3 is the best at=best one of the franchise3rd one is the best one technically. Swallow the truth

So, I've been marathoning the series. I finished the first game and now I am starting the 3 chapter of the second game. My first impressions are that the first game had a darker, more sinister atmosphere and I like the story line a little more in the first one. The action in the second game feels a little more fluid and real, however, and some of the levels are brilliant. I think the Coney Island level is absolutely great.
Easily two of the best fps games I've played. One thing in particular I've noticed is the approach to combat. I'm used to sneaking around and taking cover in fps games, but it seems like many of the scenarious in both Max Payne games encourage you to go in guns blazing...in fact, often times it's more effective.
Again, thanks for the recommendations.

it's the beauty of the "old school":) you will have that mode in the 3rd game.
however, note, it's not brute gun blazing; it's constantly moving, dodging, rolling, with precise aiming and shooting.
btw, Max Payne is third person shooter~

Oh, yeah. Heh, I'm so used to shooters being fps.

It will be interesting to see how you like the third after just playing through one and two. That is if you plan on getting the third. So, I've been marathoning the series. Just got it in the mail today. I'm installing it right now.
The original Max Payne is so challenging IMO because your slowmo does not recharge over time and only builds when you are doing badass things like shooting people. And your enemies damage you heavily no matter what difficulty you play at.
But that's what I like about the older videogames in general; they have little to no margin for error XD There's a certain charm in that, rather than always saving your game every five seconds so you don't die, you're always scared that you might die and have to start from the beginning of the level.
Max Payne is incredibly fun and I recommend it to everybody.
