Is the "256MB 8600M GT" reasonable for my laptop?

I'm planning on buying myself a Dell XPS (1440x900), but the highest graphics card they have available is the 8600M GT. Is this decent enough to play todays video games on high graphics?

Also, how does this card compare to the 512MB HD 2600? Thanks for the help.

I have a dell Vostro 1500 with a 8600m GT and with drivers from laptopvideo2go.com I can play crysis on all high 1280 by 800 widescreen with 45 fps. So yes its a pretty good card.

that us a flat out lie perhaps at low-med settings u will get playable fps but defintly not high at 45fps. The 8600 gt is weak card but it will atleast let u play games altough ur will have to sacrifice alot of graphical setting to play more recent games.

lol first of all the 8600M GT is far less powerful than an 8600GT and me with an 8600GTS cannot run it at that resolution at that FPS, most likely 1024x768 all med at 40 FPS is a better estimate.

Yes im lying its not like its MY computer and I'm the one who plays on it everyday so I apparently dont know anything , btw do you all even know what laptopvideo2go.com is? They have hacked drivers so the laptop cards perform almost like the desktop counterparts but w/e.

sorry but that is flat out lie as well. their drivers aren't hacked, they use modded INF's to make drivers work for certain mobile GPUs. The right drivers will help you perform better but your 8600M GT will never ever perform like a desktop 8600 GT.

I myself have a laptop sporting an 8600M GT with 177.92 drivers from LV2G and I have played Crysis too. Playing at 1024x768 with medium-low settings, i manage between 20-35FPS. Crysis Warhead gave me better FPS but thats because they made it better optimized.

It's not a bad card, but don't pay any more than like $1000 for a laptop with one. Beyond that pricepoint you should look for a 9600 or a 9800.

It's a decent low to mid range card.

was good a year ago and is still decent, can play any game on mostly high setting except crysis which it can run on medium ok. I think the 8600m gt is faster than the hd2600

the 9600 isn't a whole lot better, it still only has 32 shaders

Thats funny I play on a very similar resolution and the last benchmark I did I got 23FPS on high average with an 8800GTS 320MB.

You must have the 8600M FORD GT 500 version of the card.

the 256mb 8600gt is good but if it was available in the 8800gt series it would have been better since you want to play games on high graphics. I dont suggest the hd2600 to you.Even if you ask them to upgrade it to a 512mb 8600gt [if ther is anything like that] they should agree with not more than half of the price of 256mb 8600gt to be paid as an upgrade
