I have seen reviews on this one but im confused.

The 9800 is 1gig and the Radeon is 512 MB.

shouldn't that mean the 9800 is faster.

look at this review.

http://forums.legitreviews.com/about15370.html

Oh and will the 4870 work with an intel core 2 quad processor?

Probably fake charts, we'll know for sure in a few days. And the amound of memory isn't a good indication of performance.

memory has little to do with overall performance the 8800 gt 256mb is better then the 8800gts 640mb so never judge by memory. altough in this day and age u dont want to get less then 512mb. oh and to point one more thing out the 9800gx2 only has and effective memory of 512mb as sli card does not give u extra memory so there both in equal in the memory department.

Im almost sure the hd 4870 will perform better than the 9800 since the 4850 is better than the 9800 gtx. Those charts are fake cuz the 4870 will be 1 gb not 512 mb

Theres a chance those 4870's were in Crossfire which is why it beat the GX2 by a decent margin.

If you use the search function at the top of the forum and read some past topics you can do a great deal of learning. It's irritating to have the same questions asked over and over.

I really don't think it will be.. Nvidia is releasing new drivers for enabling CUDA on the 8 and 9 series cards, as well as new PhysX abilities that are supposed to up the frames of all of those cards. I think the 9800GX2 as well as the GTX200 series will come out way on top once the dust settles.

u sure about that, the 4850 isnt as good as GTX9800 it supposed to be about as good as a 8800GTs 512mb card.

anyhow i think il go for crosfire x2 sinse they seem to show crossfire x2 with 4850 is just as good as 280GTX while costing less than 260.

I am expecting only a 20-30% increase in preformance from the 4870 over the 4850, so I don't think it will have the power to "overcome" the 9800GX2.

its buynig to of those cards and running them together u will need a crossfire enabled mother board to this. the 9800gx2 is just to cards in one but u dont need a sli mother board(the same thing as crossfire). the performance is not doubled but u will defintly see and increase in performance.

The HD 4850 is currently OUT on the market.. and as good as the 9800GTX... Its why the price fell rapidly and Nvidia is releasing the 9800GTX+ to fight off the HD4850 which is smacking it around for a lower price.

You don't even need benchmarks, the HD 4870 is NOT going to outperform the 9800GTX2...simple as that. the HD 4870 is simply a 4850 with 1GB of VRAM and higher clock speeds, only expect about 20% more performance over the 4850. Expect it to be the $300 competitor that falls in between the 9800GTX and 9800GTX2. It should also outperform the new 9800GTX+ coming out.

Personally, I would either buy two HD 4850's for Crossfire, or a HD 4870X2.

^^ bless yo bought a 9800gx2 didnt you ...didnt you...ahh bless.. lol

back to reality: 4870 has out performed the gx2 allready in early tests and is only slightly lower than GTX280, go to toms reveiw for one such review, 4870 out performs it quite a lot,

crossfire will just be overkill on the 4870, also very hot too. stick to 1x4870 for best results it seems, also save yourself money.

No, actually I just bought a HD 4850. We will wait and see until Guru and Anandtech come out with their bencies, If the HD 4870 beats the 9800GTX2 I will be seriously suprised. And if it does, I guess we will all know to buy vid cards with GDDR5 for now on :)
