Particularly Rome: Total War Gold Edition only going for $20, and Medieval II: Total War.

I want to get into these games, but how is it like compared to other RTSs such as Dawn of War, Star Craft, or Lord of the Rings Battle for Middle Earth II?

Anyway, I don't think I'll get Medieval II: TW until the price drops on it, but Rome for only $20 with the exp. pack looks cool. So any impressions for someone who never played the Total War series will be much appreciated.

Thanks.

I've played all of those games. Total War is VERY different from all those games. The campaign is based on turn based RTS playing and you have to manage your settlements but you have infinite time to get ready. You wage ware on other countries and eventually can take them over. The battles don't require micro. They are more tactic based and once you send them in they are good on their own unless you wanna change strats. It's a very fun game. The battles are MASSIVE. I've had battles with 5000 people but I've seen more. IT's a great game, check it out for sure if its 20 bucks

I totally and completely loved RTW, I played the game for over 3 years straight. No other game is even gonna get close to that. But M2:TW was a complete letdown for me. Full of bugs and the balance was a joke. The strongest melee fighter was actually archers. Against 80 fully armored knigts with swords and shields, they could totally mow them down. And then the patch came .. Didn't do anything. Then the second patch came (the 650mb one) and it completely destroyed my game. I couldn't even start it after I patched it. Then I find out on the official TW forums that I have to edit some files manually to be able to play it again. But to make a long story short: I lost interest in the TW series after M2:TW - I hope to God that they do a PROPER QA this time, and not release a buggy game like they did last time. It was truly unbearable to play. It lasted a month before I canned it.

The Creative Assembly is going to scrap the Rome engine...

And don't wait for Empire, go buy Rome or Medieval II. They're both excellent. I think that if you buy Rome and like it you'll like the change of scenery and huge graphics upgrade Medieval II offers. Medieval II is the best looking RTS I've ever seen but it doesn't offer anything in the way of better gameplay.

firstly its nothing like games like command and conquer or dawn of war....its a cerry different type of strategy.

basically a total war game is the pinnacle of strategy games.....the best strategy series ever made.....ever. there are crackin games like homeworld and dawn of war....very cool games. but a total war game is a step up again imho.

rome gold edition for 20 quid is the one id recommend especially if ure new to the series. its got the easiest learnign curve imho but, at higher difficulty settings, itll still stretch u.

u cant go wrong with either one though....they are both absolutely epic.....the finest example of a strategy game on the PC.

Its a mix of turn based strategy and real time strategy. On the campaign map you manage cities, armies, etc.. and when you decide to go into battle it becomes your typical real time strategy game. Once you start playing trust me, it will be hard to stop. I'd go for Rome: Total War so you can get a true feel of why Total War fans love the series so much.

With the lack of good new games now, I recently bought Medieval II gold which comes with the expansion. I played Rome a few years ago and loved it. I somehow overlooked Medieval II and just now getting to it.

The Total War games are a serious time investment, but they are also some of the best strategy games you will ever play. Period.

Buy Total War Eras right now.

Perhaps he still needs advice. Some people are just no good at making their minds up.

Wow, didn't even realize that it was that old. Well, if he sees the thread he's got some good answers.
