It is one of the best RPGs of the decade and extremely important as the evolution of the genre goes.So is The Witcher any good and why?

I'm thinking about picking up The Witcher Enhanced Edition Director's Cut also. Steam is selling it for 66% off for it's holiday sale. Wow, I am buying WAY too many games because of this sale:lol:
It's worth it. I bought the Extended Edition retail at full price, but it is such a great RPG I don't mind. Good character development, story, and battles. I most likely enjoyed it also because it was a more mature RPG that you don't see much these days. So looking forward to the Witcher 2.

Yes, the Witcher is worth it and an excellent game because:
-Excellent story: it is based off a series of already-established novels written by a Polish author iirc; the lore, history, denizens, and all that are rich and full of life
-Characters: every single character is memorable and interesting
-Monsters: I thought the monsters were very interesting, and for good reason; Geralt, the game's hero, is a monster hunter.
-Voiceacting: for the most part, the voiceacting is fairly well done. Its not Hollywood Epic quality, more TV Movie quality, but I thought it was pretty good
-Gameplay: while the swordplay is simplistic, the strategy makes up for it. The signs you use, along with your alchemy (potions) really spice things up. Also, while I said it was kind of plain, it looks really, really cool
-Hot naked chicks, and you get to get your freak on with them.
-Atmosphere: forget your fairy tale setting typical of other RPGs; the Witcher takes place in a dark, dirty world full of jerks, bums, and bad people. Its just a gloomy, depressing place and the game is better for it.

I agree - It easily destroys Dragon Age
It has a nice story with interesting characters but it has terrible combat. The combat alone was almost enough to make be stop playing. Then again, it's an action-rpg so I guess it's not really fair to knock The Witcher for following some of the conventions of its genre (i.e. really bad, twitch-based combat).
The best thing I can say about The Witcher is that I usually HATE action-RPGs but I honestly enjoyed The Witcher enough to finish it. It's a good game it's just not a great one and it's well worth whatever sale price Steam is charging.
I also dislike the combat in The Witcher - it's too simplistic. On the opposite end of this simple/complex spectrum of video game combat would be a game like Ninja Gaiden Black for the original XBOX. I would've loved a complex combat system with combos (kinda like Arkham Asylum). On the whole, though, The Witcher is very heavy on story, graphics, and content. RPG fans will dig it, no doubt about it.. For what it's worth, I'm not really a big RPG fan, although I enjoyed Mass Effect and Fallout 3.It has a nice story with interesting characters but it has terrible combat. It's one of the few RPG's that actually has fun combat mechanics - and I thought the action-RPG genre was the one known to have fun combat. Having played Dragon Age recently just reminded me how slow traditional WRPG's combat tends to progress...It has a nice story with interesting characters but it has terrible combat. I really didn't like it that much. And I've been playing PC RPGs longer than most on here (since early Ultima days and on)..
It's not really complex. It has bad VA. Bad animations. Bad combat system, the combat is so basic it will make you dibble and foam at the mouth. Bad itemization. Bad character progression, with no class system. Doesn't have much exploration, or freedom in exploration.
The main character is sort of mildly amusing I suppose. And yes you can screw witches among a few other females in the game. Lots of dialogue, and decent visuals. But a part from that, seriously what is all the fuss about over this game. There is not even one moment in the game where I thought "oh snap that was awesome" or even a moment where I could acknowledge the game for being creative. I don't get it. It's definitely worth no more that what it has on metacritic which is 86.. . It's a above average RPG and nothing more really.
Definitely preferred Oblivion/FO3/ and DA much more than The Witcher. Take it from a VET, If you haven't played one of those games get one of those instead.
I agree with most of what you said, except for the bad animations. I thought the game had reasonably good freedom of exploration and openness. Although I'm not a big RPG guy, I'm a semi-vet and have played some earlier Ultimas, most notably Ultima Underworld. I even remember the original King's Quest :-) I haven't played Oblivion or Dragon Age, but I enjoyed Mass Effect and Fallout 3 to The Witcher. If the OP hasn;t played those, you're giving him good advice by telling him to play the better games first. Since I'm not a huge RPG guy, I didn't think it was a big deal that there wasn't a class system. I don't feel like character class selection is mandatory for an RPG to be fun, but it's definitely a very commonly used game feature that The Witcher doesn't use. Lastly, I'm sure you'd agree that $13 for The Witcher is a decent value. Like you said, overall it's an above-average RPG.I really didn't like it that much. EDIT - I haven't finished The Witcher. yet. I am currently on Chapter 2.
The Witcher shouldn't be in the "worth it or not" type of threads...it belongs to a thread like "which is the best CRPG since BG2."
