i am going to buy a dell xps 420 and it has a x-38 motherboard,im not sure if its sli enabled though and dell offers only 1 gpu on purchase,i planned on getting the lowest end gpu on purchase and then later buy 2 8800gtx cards,is this possible ?

No, you cannot go SLI on the X38 chipset. You can go Crossfire with ATI cards though.

And I would strongly advise against buying the lowest-end GPU you can get with that thing. Just get something worth buying and be done with it. I'd say the 8600GT/HD2600XT/HD3650 as a bare minimum.
