Is it just a toss-up between two or more cards (depending on the game), assuming all the other hardware is "top-notch".

Will the two video card companies have something in the works fairly soon that will cement their title as "the best"?

well, in the performance order: GTX 295; followed by the 285, the 4870 X2 tends to be around 285 performance, then the GTX 280 ,then is the 4870 1 gb, and then, very close, the 55 nm 216 shader GTX 260

as some people know, certain games like one card over the other.

go for the card that gets best performance in the games you play, it can also depend on the engine.

You must of course consider, both cards are much more expensive than their ATI counterpart (4870 x2, 4870). Although the 4870 is a good bit slower than the 285, ATI will release a 49XX card to counter i think.

Currently, if money is no issue, the GTX 295 is the speed king.

GTX 295 at the moment. GTX 300 will be the best though.
