I have done some research, and as far as I can tell, the DISPLAYS are the same. The only difference apart from the extras (eg LED, speakers and camera on the Apple Cinema Display) the only difference is the Apple uses Mini Display Port, while the Dell can use HDMI 1.3, which can support 1.07 billion colors with Deep Color. Displayport it appears, as of now does not.
Get the Dell in this case.

ACD has LED backlighting, which means that the CCFL backlit Dell has a wider colour gamut, as well as the 30 bit colour. the U2711 is targeted towards professionals, but it is affordable and better than the ACD.
Just to add.
Its a two edged sword. On one hand you are getting better slightly colour reproduction, but at the cost of higher power usage, and mercury...
For consumers the ACD is arguably better. You get a webcam, and stereo speakers, a brighter screen, and lower power draw for $50. Sounds pretty reasonable for an apple product...
calibrated (!!) (how many consumers actually calibrate their monitors) the power consumption difference is 2.64kWhrs (on 4 hours every day for a month, that costs about 30c-40c), extremely negligible to the consumer. mercury also isn't a problem to the consumer unless they crack open the monitor and have a good sit down and inhale all the good stuff. while valid externalities that favour the LED, if you want better colour reproduction, then the costs of owning a U2711 are too small to matter.
Webcam, I concede that point.
Stereo speakers: also conceded, but you'd assume that people willing to shell out for a 'cinema display' or a high quality screen might have a quality audio solution or are going to buy one.
As for brightness, it washes out the colours so it's counterproductive. how many more lux (cd/m^2) do you need after 350?
