I was wondering if there is a point upgrading?

I am on my 3rd computer now, all custom built. This one was built back in 2007.

In the last year I have put 2 more sticks of ram and a 500gb Harddrive in (up from 160gb). I should have bought a TB Harddrive, although I do have an external one I use for backups. I have about 200gb left.

Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+ (2 CPUs), ~3.0GHz

Memory: 4096MB RAM

DirectX Version: DirectX 11

Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250

Manufacturer: NVIDIADisplay Memory: 2796 MB
Dedicated Memory: 1005 MB
Shared Memory: 1791 MB
Current Mode: 1680 x 1050 (32 bit) (60Hz)
Monitor Name: Generic PnP Monitor
Monitor Model: SyncMaster

I should mention I have replaced 3 Video Cards in less than 2 years. All Nvidia cards. A geforce 9800 GT 3 times until I got my current card. They burnt out within 6-7 months. None were overclocked. Hopefully the same does not happen to this card. I have had it for about 5 months now.

That processor could use a kick in the pants - do you know if your motherboard supports the newer Athlon II and Phenom II series chips? The graphics card is also getting slightly long in the tooth, but probably not worth worrying about yet.

What casing do you have? Maybe your GPU voews have something to do with a poor casing and you might wanna look into upgrading that first.

As for the performance parts, I would definitely upgrade the CPU, the GPU can still cut it at 16x10 so you can hold off on that for a while. But whatever you do dont upgrade the GPU before upgrading CPU.

yes I should have added that the power supply was replaced.

The first card I think just died because it was faulty. The 2 that followed were probably from the power supply. I paid for a new one and all the cards put back in were done free so it was no big deal.

I am not sure if my motherboard supports the new cpus. I will have to check the model for it. I will get back to you.

I'd get a new GPU, and by the sounds of things a new PSU. However I would wait on upgrading your processor until we see what Bulldozer brings to the table. You can decide on a CPU then. You'll have a whole new batch of CPU's to choose from as well as cheaper AM3 cpu's. Its a win win either way

sell your rig for something like 100-150$ (if you manage) and add something like 300-400$ and you will be able to make a considerable upgrade.

The CPU is a bit rusty to be honest. Unless you have the cash for a i5 2500 and a 5850 or better I wouldn't upgrade.

I upgraded from a 5600+ to essentially a X4 955 (X2 550 unlocked) and the difference is night and day. All you have to upgrade is the motherboard and CPU. You can buy a DDR2 mobo, like I did, to save money on not buying RAM. Overall, my mobo+CPU only costed me a measly $140. Definitely worth it.

GTS 250 = 4850, and let me tell you, with the system I have, you can still kick serious ass until developers actually start to not focus on console ports (HA!). Like that's ever going to happen in the near future.

The CPU's holding him back much more than the GPU.

I also have a 4850. Basically unless he has the cash to build a whole new system I wouldn't do anything. The CPU he has might be holding him back, but not so much that he can't enjoy new games. I think unless he is going to go all out with a new PC then he can squeeze a little more time out of his current PC.

A dual core is definitely much more a limitation than GTS 250....

I speak from personal experience. An upgrade from an Athlon x2 to a Phenom x4 is a HUGE one. And it's not like a Phenom x4 is irrelevant today, it's clearly far from it as many games have yet to ultilize quads still.

And like I said, my mobo+CPU can be had for next to nothing, so why not upgrade?

I agree. But the phenom 64 (or at least the one I have) is am2+ not am2

Yeah, you need a new mobo if you want to use Phenoms. I recommend mine, since you'd be able to reuse DDR2 ram.

Is there any reason to wait a bit?

The thing with computer technology is the minute you buy something, something better is out the next week.

I will not be upgrading my whole computer. I cannot afford that at all. Most of you already said that my system is still decent. I mean I can play everygame I own on high graphics, not full AA, but enough that the game(s) looking stunning. But if I can get my computer faster in general for cheap I would like that.

You reccomend yours and I am looking online as I type this.

What's happening in June?

Is there a good site to keep tabs on for the latest and greatest PC gaming parts?

AMD's new CPU lineup Bulldozer is coming in June.

Forget Bulldozer - there won't a be DDR2 AM3+ motherboard for you to use. That's $40 worth of RAM down the drain. Just forget it. A Phenom II X4 is more than you'll ever need for a very long time.

There's no reason at all to wait - you're getting a CPU that'll last you for at least 3 years. And it's REALLY dirt cheap. What's there to lose?
