AM2+ processors are backwards compatible with AM2 motherboards, as will be AM3 processors. You might be best served waiting for socket AM3 to drop if you're enthusiastic about SLI / performance mobos, simply because AM3's support of DDR3 makes it more future-proof, but that's just speculation on my part.
You could easily use an AM2 mobo going forward though, since, arguably the DDR3 / dual-power plane revisions are minor in comparisson to going SLI, in terms of performance gains.
