Is there something I'm missing about AA?

Right, I manage to play games just fine without AA. Sligh pixelation (Oh so very, very slight) doesn't bother me. But I notice many people all want their games up in 16x. I mean, if I were to get a high end, but not top-of-the-range card, I'd put it on 2x and max everything else. 'cause it really is a massive performance killer. Is there something I'm missing out on that leads to such an obsession for AA?

I don't think most people put it higher than 4x unless they're playing at insane resolutions. The bigger the res, the more annoying jaggies are

Lower res you get more jaggies not higher res. The more pixels you have the less aliasing, you need more AA at lower resolutions than at higher resolutions.

Some people just like to flex their rig's muscle, while some crank up the AA to improve their experience/immersion with a game.

16x AA is useless. It depends on the display size and resolution, but 4x is generally more than enough.

I notice it when there isn't AA. However, I don't really make a big deal about it. If I still have great performance with 4x or 8x AA then I'll use it. If the performance sucks with it on then I just won't enable it. It isn't game breaking to me if there isn't AA.

At 1080p I barely notice a difference from 2X to 8X. If I CAN run it at 16x, I will, otherwise, it doesn't matter.

This is the wrong way around, you need less AA the higher res you go. I find X4 @ 1080P is perfect although some games look blurry so I opt for X2 in that case.

I find that I still notice jaggies at 1920*1080, 16xAA. Then again, Nvidia's 16xAA is called CSAA I believe and is a sort of hybrid in that it still only uses 4 samples.

Ultimately it's rather game dependant and 16xCSAA + 8xSS Transparency AA makes for very pleasing results imo.

At 1080p i never need more than 4X, and if that lowers performance a lot i'm fine with 2X. I run 8X in source games since i get over 200fps anyway.

Yes..YES, its the lower res's that suffer from more jaggies. I run at 25x16 and 2x AA is MORE than enough. But...yeah..peeps like to say they are running 16x...just to say it.

I play at 1366x768 (laptop) so yeah, AA is needed in my case. But like KyleGates said, 16x with everything else up high is maxing out a game isn't it so people are bound to want to get that.
