the PS3 is a very powerful machien, the thing has a 9 core processor,8 of those cores runs at 3.2GHZ in 128-bit, the 9th one tells and gives the information to each core.I wouldn't be suprised it the CPU alone of a PS3 could out perform a avarage PC. The GPU of the PS3 is also very powerfull the thing has, 33 unified pixel shaders runing at 700MHz the core it's self is 64-bit no comsumer GPU runs in 64-bit, now for thoses people who say that GPU's run at 256-bit - 768-bit it's the memory that runs at thoses bit rates. suposively the next gen GPU's will run in 64-bit.rogeliozim
The CPU was said to be as powerful as a Pentium 4 for gaming though , the cell is not designed for gaming in mind, therefore its still false information.
Here are the P3 stats, if anyone wants to get the equivilant teraflops numbers of a modern PC + modern graphics card and add those:
CPU Cell Processor running at 3.2Ghz with 7 special purpose 3.2Ghz processors, capable of 218 gigaflops of performance Backward compatible GPU RSX at 550MHz 1.8 teraflop floating point performance 256Mb XDR main RAM at 3.2 GHz 256Mb of GDDR VRAM at 700Mhz Memory Stick Duo, SD, compact flash memory slots Detachable 2.5 inch hard drive Support for seven Bluetooth controllers Six USB slots for peripherals Supports Blu-ray DVD format System Floating Point Performance of 2 teraflops Communication Ethernet, Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11, Bluetooth Output in HDTV resolution up to 1080p as standard
The question I have is when will the PS3 show its (supposed) muscle? Although the current PS3 games are nice, they are nothing compared to current high-end PC games. Is this because the developers out there don't yet have the development tools to create awesomeness? Or, as some have suggested, (which I don't buy) the platform is too complex and too scary for developers to work with? A combination of both? Or...or...what?
Why haven't we seen anything thatwould make you say: Wow. That's awesome!
It is probably 20x faster at one certain type of specific processing as it applies to the proprietary games which have been created for it. However, it would burst into flames if it tried to open a PDF file.weirjf
I lol'd!
I think by standard they mean a PIII with 512MB memory and a Geforce 4LE card.
Seriously, though, imo a "standard" PC is one of those 400 dollar typewriter-replacements you get at Costco or Bestbuy. Its got a celeran, a little RAM, and maybe some onboard graphics and a 300GB harddrive with a 7-in-1 reader and a DVD player. It can load the photos of your nephew, hold songs, type documents, and browse internet pages but thats it.
Its just another example of a logical fallacy used in marketing and of how stupid and gullible some people are. Any half-intelligent person would say "Hmmm, 20 times more powerful? Thats a little doubtful I wonder what the criterion is for a 'standard PC'" but a PS3 fanboy would automatically buy into it.
Is a PS3 20 times more powerful than a "standard" PC described above? Yes. But so is my foot; I can run, kick a ball, and do all sorts of things with my feet.
