Is there such a thing as a "warm up period" for computers?

Like, is it possible to take a while for a computer to reach optimal performance for reasons other than caching and stuff?

No, but if you're running Windows and not careful.. it will do the opposite of warming up. :)

I suppose. But its only a few (maybe 4 or 5) seconds long from pressing the power button. It takes a few seconds for the hard drive platters to spin at maximum speed. Thats about it.

No perioids of that kind. Fans, Hard-drives, Optical drives and BIOS battery are the most common components that you will ever have to change.
